I'm installing this in a 2x4 wall with a 2x4 panel. What is the the clearance needed for it to open and close smoothly?

We have about 1/4 inch clearance. However I would check further, these hinges do not return the doors to middle automatically.

Can you use this hinge for a hidden bookshelf door? Outswing and mounted from the left corner? Or does it have to be a center mount?

I used the hinge on a paneled wall on a hidden door, I set it in from the edge 3 inches, the panel opens out and worked great.

very heavy duty

Tolerances could be better and the pin for moving arm would have been nice if it was flush with top of hinge, but otherwise this will work for my purposes.
