Does the ball stay in the net? If so, how do you get the ball down from the net if the ceiling is too high?

The Ball never stays in the net. You shoot or throw it through the hoop and it falls right back to you.

Can you remove it without damaging the ceiling?

YES! Works perfectly on popcorn and textured ceilings. Always take it down and/or remove it slowly and carefully.
