A Timeless Classic Built to Last—Just Remember the RPN!
I have been using the HP 12C for over 20 years, and its enduring quality is absolutely legendary—my original units are still working perfectly today. This calculator is a durable, reliable workhorse that covers all the critical functions needed for finance: Time Value of Money (TVM), NPV, IRR, Amortization, and Bond Calculations. Comparing it to modern devices, it's interesting to note how much faster technology has become. On older HP 12C models, running complex calculations like the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) would often display the "running" indicator for a noticeable period. The newer calculators are so incredibly fast that this indicator no longer appears, completing the task almost instantaneously—a small detail that highlights the HP 12C's incredible tenure in the market. The most important thing to note before purchasing is the requirement to use Reverse Polish Notation (RPN). This is a different input method than the standard algebraic method you might be used to. Instead of typing "2 + 2 =", you input the numbers first and then the operation: "2 [ENTER] 2 [+]." There is a learning curve, but once mastered, RPN is far more efficient and reduces the chance of input errors. It’s what makes the 12C a favorite among financial professionals. This is a fantastic, indispensable tool that I highly recommend for anyone serious about personal finance or real estate.

Good calculator for the price
Calculates much faster than my old one, looks the same which is great, and functions the same. Best as I remember the price is the same. Good calculator for the price with all its functions.

A Classic That Still Gets the Job Done (If You’re Willing to Learn)
I picked up the HP 12C after starting my financial analyst coursework, mostly because it’s still recommended (and even required) for some certification exams. I’d heard it was an “industry standard,” and honestly, I get why. 🟢 What I Like: Solid build, compact design – This thing feels professional. It’s not flashy, but it’s clearly built to last. I can toss it in my bag and not worry. Powerful functions – Everything I’ve needed so far: TVM, IRR, NPV, amortization, bond yields—it’s all built in and surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it. Efficient (once you learn RPN) – The Reverse Polish Notation felt weird at first, but now that I’ve gotten used to it, it’s faster and less prone to mistakes than standard calculators.

Excellent on longevity
This is the second HP12C calculator I’ve owned. The first one lasted 44 years. I’m a CPA, so it got lots of use. It has a lot of functions on it; it can calculate payments based on principal, interest and time; number of days between 2 different days; and other financial functions.

Still high quality after all these years
The original is still the best! I have owned several 12c’s over the last 40 years and the never disappoint.

Oldie but goldie
This is just like the one that I used in college 35 years ago. I only replaced the old one because it stopped working. I have always loved the RPN logic. I also bought a TI at the same time as this one and frankly cannot stand it.

Okay, skips entries sometimes
Excellent, great replacement for my old one from 1990. UPDATE Oct 2025, this works well some/most of the time but it sometimes skips a number entry while giving the feel it’s been entered, eg adding up a bunch of numbers. It has thrown me off a few times and that’s been frustrating. I recommend only using it on a very hard surface and paying close attention to numerical entries. Double check your computations. Bummer it’s brand new and not reliable. My HP12 from late 1980s is better, but I needed a second one and didn’t want to chance buying used.

EXCELENTE PRODUCTO.

The HP12C is legendary for a reason. It remains the gold standard financial calculator for anyone wishing to learn how to use it. I can't think of many other products that have remained unchanged after 36 years of continuous production. In a moment of weakness some years ago I purchased the 12C Platinum. Never again, I quickly swapped back to the 12C this purchase replaced (and only because my bag was stolen on a train just before Christmas). The 12C is not just for oldies on a nostalgia trip, learning/using RPN and manipulating the stack is a productive mental work out in its own right. I think HP have addressed the quality issues that plagued some machines a few years ago. Mine has a solid feel to it and the keys have that positive 'i've pushed it' feed back sensation. The enter key works wherever on the key it is pushed. Personally I find the display easier to read than the 12C Platinum, but this may not be the case for everyone. From experience I know the 12C has a tremendously long battery life measured in years (between 3 and 5 according to use) augmented by a built in turn off function after around ten minutes of inactivity. The landscape orientation of the keyboard ensures much greater stability when holding to use versus the all but ubiquitous portrait format style of other calculators. This feature greatly reduces the risk of keystroke error when the machine is not being used while placed on a desk top surface for example. The housing or body of the HP12C has an inherent slope as it is thicker at the top than at the bottom. This makes the LCD display clearer and crisper to read. I found the slightly sepia LCD display background deals with office lighting glare better than the blue/grey backgrounds normally found on other calculators and also HP's 12C Platinum. It probably sounds a bit geeky to bang on about a calculator but if you do have to use one, you owe it to yourself to own one that at the very least you can enjoy at the same time. HP12C £49.99 - the look of confusion on a colleagues face "just borrowing your calculator err where's the = button, umm how does this work" - PRICELESS.
