A 16-year-old boy wreaks havoc on the streets of Sunset Park, is kicked out of his home, drops out of school and learns his girlfriend is pregnant. His 14-year-old sister wants nothing to do with her newborn son, leaves the child's care to her mother, slips into a severe depression and tries to kill herself. In the face of violence and deep despair, this troubled family turns to a dedicated nun--Sister Geraldine Tobia--whose devotion to them never wavers. This emotionally wrenching cinema verité documentary, shot over the course of three years, offers a candid portrait of a family in crisis and a remarkable nun who refuses to give up on them. ALSO INCLUDES: Why Can't We Be a Family Again? This Academy Award(r)-nominated film paints an intimate portrait of how two brothers who were devastated by their mother's addiction and neglect found a way to thrive and redefine what it means to be a family.

Great Documentary
Arrived one day early. DVD works just fine. While I haven't watched A Brooklyn Family Tale yet, Why Can't We Be a Family is a documentary that really pulls at your heartstrings. I had been searching for the DVD for years after having originally watched on PBS. I was very glad to have found it on Amazon.
