Can you lift up the top of the printer to reveal a flatbed so that it can copy a page from a book?

Yes. You can copy or scan a book page in B&W or color.

DOES IT COME WITH A FULL TONER CARTRIDGE

Comes with 40% starter cartridges but when the printer says they are empty you can reset them and keep going until the toner actually runs out. My office has two MFC-9340CDW being used daily for 8 months and have only replaced the black. Used Brother TN-221BK (standard yield). Pretty happy with this printer model so far.

If color toners run out can you still print with only black toner?

Yes. You can always set to just print with black toner. Do this as default and just choose color when you want it and you will save money. Brother uses deceptive toner empty messages that you cannot turn off. The work around is cumbersome and tedious once you find out how to do it. Change the toner when the messages tell you to and you throw away large amounts of toner just because you get a deceptive message every time you print. I like the prints but think it is second rate device.

The PC Magazine review says this output for this machine has sub-par photo quality and so-so graphics. Does anybody have feedback on this?

Compared to the old Brother HL-4150, I found this printer have far inferior print quality. You get far more banding from the print rollers on this one. It's very obvious on any large graphics. The colors are more accurate though.
