The essential companion for the dedicated Mah Jong player who also enjoys the social aspect of the game. Since the arrival on the market of Patricia Thompson and Betty Maloney's two previous books, The Game of Mah Jong Illustrated and Improve Your Mah Jong , a wide range of hands from many parts of the world has been sent to them. In this playerโs companion, the authors have put together a cross-filed reference guide where more than 120 hands, illustrated in color, can be quickly identified by following the flip-top headings on each page. A full synopsis of each hand is included. The extra hands give an international flavor to the book, adding new interest and challenges. Review: THE MAH JONG PLAYER'S COMPANION. EXCELLENT!! - THE MAH JONG PLAYER'S COMPANION is an excellent book for beginners and beyond. All hands are shown in colour making it easy to understand as well as it is indexed so you can look up hands that can be made from tiles you have been dealt. It includes scoring and strategies on how to place your tiles so others don't predict your hand. It includes organising a tournament and answers questions to the rules of the game. The index is divided conveniently into RUNS, CHOWS, PAIRS, WINDS, DRAGONS, BAMBOO CHARACTER AND CIRCLE SUITS, and many more. I would highly recommend this book for new comers to Mah Jong. Review: A great way to learn new ways to win. - I just learned to play Mah Jong this summer. This book has helped me learn several more "hands". The pictures are a great help and even some of my long-playing friends have learned more by using this book. I highly recommend this book.

Perfect!
The Mah jong group I play with in FL uses this book. Since it is out of print, the price is twice what is listed on the book itself. However, unlike the National Maj Jong League cards that are $7 each year (as it changes each April), you buy this book once only, and use it year after year. It contains 64 pages of possible hands you can aim for, with rules and helpful suggestions in the back several pages.

Order arrived early and book has many creases
This book arrived about 2 weeks early which was good. The book ordered was New, however, it has many creases and bends in it. I haven't started using it yet.

I wish there were more stars!
This book has COLOR pictures of all the hands I knew and then some! The group I taught to play fell in love with this book, although it has slowed down play as everyone looks up new hands to try. I love all three of Thompson & Maloney's mah jong books. This is truely for the die hard fan of the game who is always looking for a new hand as well as for the slightly advanced beginner. Seeing the hands helps. The book also breaks the hands into a short list used to start with and then a longer list of even more beautiful mah jong hands.

Great book!
This is a great book for Mahjong players! Everyone in my group loves this book! After mastering traditional mahjong, this is a perfect book to try new games. The pictures are great and the games are a lot of fun!

If you like MahJong this is very helpful
This was a gift for my Wife, because she loves this game. She needed another one because others that want to play need to know the rules, there are too many to remember

A different "Western" mah ....
I thought this book would help me understand the American version of Mah better and it did not. It lists many hands and the hands are titled ... but his means nothing to someone who only plays the American version who purchases a new card each year. That said, I am sure it is my ignorance in not knowing what was meant by the title...I am sure this book would be helpful to those playing the game perhaps known as Chinese Mah...and has information on scoring that I didn't know existed. Again, this is probably due to my ignorance of the game but I would never have purchased it had I known it was different than the American version. In a nutshell, had I read the reviews I would have known this and not purchased the book!

Excellent
I bought a lovely Mah Jong set when I was in Hong Kong a while ago and have therefore, been eager to use it. So I am pleased to have come across this booklet. It makes Mah Jong much easier to understand. Would well recommend it.

Good Book, Easy to Read
Has a full set of rules, easy to follow. Just understand there are dozens of rules and each writer rules are different to the last one. But have fun, MahJong one of the greats games on earth.

Ease of use
Coil bound book would stay open for easier use while playing. Appreciate the coloured diagrams. A great game to play.

No good as an ebook
This is a poor example of an eBook. It is supposed to be a players reference book but (at least on he Kindle Android reader) it is very poor implementation. It is printed in a landscape format but will only display in portrait and there is no scaling or zooming available so the print and diagrams are very difficult to read.
