Wild Horse Annie: Friend of the Mustangs

Strong Female Character, True Story
This book is an interesting true story, and particularly relevant for my kids. We regularly take road trips in which we see wild mustangs in the American West, so my kids (9, 7, & 4) had context for them. Mustangs are protected in a similar way to bald eagles in America and this woman made that happen.I appreciate the true story of courage. Annie, who had lifelong effects from a bout with polio, decided to work to save the wild mustangs being killed for sport near her ranch. She worked with children to write letters and organize with decision-makers. Men laughed at her, though she had a very supportive husband.I bought this book for my daughter, but I’m very glad my sons read it too. The themes of resilience and standing up for what you believe in are universal, and the author doesn’t shy away from the ways that can be particularly challenging for women. The historical facts throughout lead to more questions and more research. My kids were interested in polio, how hunting is regulated, and how letters to elected officials can make a real difference. The pictures are fun and detailed. The story is rich and takes a good 30 minutes to read. We’ve put it in our “read again” pile because we enjoyed it so much!

True Story that Holds Kiddo’s Attention
I haven’t read this one yet, but my 7-year-old loves it and has told me about it - in depth. We received it in our book children’s book club shipment. He’s very impressed that it’s a true story and he’s gone through it several times, keeping it close to him for easy reach. Very happy with it.

True story but not for little kids
I only was able to see the limited pictures for this book, none of the actual story pages. Let's just say the author didn't fully understand the concept of children's book. The illustrator understood his assignment. The story is good but way TOO descriptive of the fate of wild mustangs before protections where created for small children.
