I didn't take it out of the clear wrapper to check to see if the buttons worked as it was a gift for my son's band director who plays the saxophone. It looked very nice before I wrapped it and it makes for a very nice gift. From the other responses, I see that the buttons do not work, but I would still buy this item for that special saxophonist on your gift list!

Could small flowers be put in the horn?

They would need to be very small! But, it would be possible to put short stemmed small budded flowers in, I believe!
