This is THE best tofu press... and I've tried them all!
EZ Tofu Press - Removes Water from Tofu for Better Flavor and Texture. First of all, a caveat... my purchases and choice of tofu may not be the norm, and the other tofu presses might do a better job for me were I to buy the kind of tofu sold in those water-packed plastic containers of softer tofu. However, no tofu results in denser, chewier bites, even after marinating, than Trader Joe's Super Firm 1 lb. blocks of tofu! Even meat-eaters who normally would shun tofu because of the mushy consistency love my tofu! :-) About three years ago I got tired of the usual methods of wrapping tofu in paper towels or towels and weighting it down with various objects. The last time everything tipped over I had had enough, and searched on my beloved Amazon for a tofu press. I chose the EZ Tofu Press that served me well for about three years, but over time and lots and lots of tofu pressing, the top plate had a noticeable bend that didn't bounce back as before. I contacted the seller and found out that there was a newer model with thicker plates, and he offered to ship it to me as a replacement. I thought that as nice a gesture as it was, I had had a lot of good use out of it, and would just spend another twenty bucks on another. This year I spent a lot more on the other tofu presses I purchased (Amazon can verify my shopping habits!) because I was looking for the easiest to use that could do the job well. Unfortunately, the spring-loaded ones didn't work for me, and that's why I went back to the EZ Tofu Press where I would simply go back and tighten the wingnuts on the press sitting over a colander in the sink -- until it was as compressed as possible -- and better able to absorb the marinade "bath" for the next step. The other presses I purchased in the past year (see attached photo) did NOT work well for me -- and it's possible that my TJ's tofu is just too firm. Btw, everyone really should freeze their tofu (and letting it then thaw out) before pressing and marinading. Fantastic result! :-) First of all, it turns out that the tofu blocks I get here (in the Pacific Northwest) are different from the ones on at least one area of the East Coast I found out about. BIGGER. Thicker! Different TJ's suppliers. I would have to press down the blocks in my old EZ Tofu Press (with the slightly curved top plate) in order to fit the blocks into the spring-loaded ones. But then they wouldn't compress down far enough. After buying other presses in trying to solve the problem I realized that the best one was my first, the EZ tofu press, but I wanted a new top plate. In my contact with the seller, telling him that I had purchased the new model but that the tofu now would not fit inbetween the plates, we found out that my TJ tofu is much thicker than what he gets at his Trader Joe's. However, he offered to send me a replacement (again) that wouldn't have the top locking mechanism holding in the wing nuts. I again declined the replacement, and put DH to work to take those off. Now I have the PERFECT tofu press -- it fits my big blocks of super firm tofu AND allows me to press it down as far as I like. It costs much less than the others I have, which I will still test out with the "normal" water-packed tofu when I get desperate such as during a TJ's super firm tofu shortage (perish the thought!) -- but I can honestly say that I couldn't be happier with the EZ Tofu Press AND the customer service. Ben's willingness to send a replacement at the slightest hint of an issue said volumes about this company -- and with the thicker plates in the new model, I anticipate years and years of trouble-free tofu pressing! :-)

Fast, easy & effective
Simple, easy design. Great for draining the water out of tofu… it’s a game changer. No more stacking heavy pans and weights and towels on top of your tofu. It’s fast and very effective.

Simple and effective device
I bought my first block of tofu a few weeks ago. I had researched what firmness to get, but I failed to notice that it also needs to be pressed until I brought it home. Tofu is stored in brine that needs to be squeezed out so the tofu can soak up the liquids of whatever you cook it with. I checked amazon for presses and noticed that this was one of the cheaper ones with good ratings. At first it looked like I could make one of these myself, but I decided it'd be quicker and easier not to get into a DIY project while I had tofu waiting on me. After using the EZ-Tofu Press 3 or 4 times, I have come to appreciate what a good value it actually is. The design is incredibly simple, but the whole thing was assembled by someone who obviously knew what they were doing. The craftsmanship is solid. The whole thing is easy to clean and the screws move smoothly. I am finding this device as invaluable as my rice cooker when it comes to preparing Indian food. Like most specialty kitchen devices, its value depends on how much it's used. If you are only buying tofu for a single occasion, it may not be worth it to get a press. If you know you like tofu and would like to incorporate it into your diet occasionally, this is a very handy piece of equipment to have around. Saves a lot of time, effort, and messes.

Great tofu press and I wish I had bought one years ago
For years, I used the ol' heavy books and paper towel trick to press my tofu, but only when I had the time to keep the leaning tower from toppling over. Although most times I wouldn't press the tofu because I couldn't tell much of a difference between my "pressed" and non-pressed tofu and my 'fu always ended up disappointing. I wanted to make restaurant style tofu at home, so I investigated different types of tofu presses. I follow about 100 vegan blogs and both this press and the Xpress have been reviewed at various times over the past couple of years. I looked through blog reviews, Amazon reviews, and product descriptions and decided to go with the EZ Tofu Press because 1) It is very simple which means there are less things that can break and 2) It is about half the cost of the other press. Things I love about the press: It takes about 20 minutes to expel enough water to get a dense, fairly dry bean curd. It is very easy to operate with parts that shouldn't rust or break easily. The press takes up minimal room when not in use. The expelled water does not pool up around the tofu. Things that I don't love as much about the press: You do have to attend to twisting the knobs every couple of minutes, but this isn't that big of a deal. While making dinner, I just twist the knobs every so often until the tofu is done. I turn the press on the side and let the water drip into a plate, which takes up some real estate in the kitchen. Again, not so much of a big deal, but something to think about. Overall, I love this press. It is easy to use and works very quickly

Best invention for tofu ever!
I was recently told by my doctor that I should adopt a vegan diet to make things easier for my heart. Tough news for a guy who likes to smoke a beef brisket for 16 hours. It looked like tofu would be an important part of my diet, so I had to learn how to make it taste good. Up to now, tofu played a very minor role due to its bland and slightly funky taste. I started looking at recipes and finally found a comment on pressing tofu to improve it's ability to absorb a marinade. The article also said removing excess water would also make it taste better. I searched Amazon for a tofu press to read the reviews. The EZ Tofu Press looked like the best tool out there, and it also had a cool industrial vibe that I liked. The press was delivered quickly, with no postage, thanks to Amazon Prime. I always like sellers who use this feature. It makes them seem more friendly to me. They care about their customers. When I unwrapped it, I immediately liked the quality of the components. Two hefty slabs of food safe plastic, with good quality stainless steel hardware. Plastic. It was not as fancy as some of the other options, but I liked the simplicity of the design. I'm a designer myself, and we call this an elegant design, with "good bones". It does what it's designed to do, and nothing else. It works simply with no fuss. The EZ Tofu Press is easy to use and clean, and there are no parts to wear out. I put a block of firm tofu between the plastic slabs and tightened the wing-nuts until water started to drain out into the sink. I waited a few minutes and tightened it up a bit more while I made a sugar free sweet and sour marinade. After about 30 minutes, the tofu was about half its original thickness. I unscrewed the screws and sliced the tofu into strips, and put them in a ziplock bag with the marinade for an overnight soak in the fridge. The next day I put the tofu strips on a Silpat silicone baking sheet in a 425 degree oven for 20 minutes, turning them over half way through. The marinade made a shiny glaze on the tofu, and the inside was creamy!! It was like a hot custard, nicely infused with the flavors of the marinade. This was a big surprise for me. I didn't know tofu could do this. I do recommend eating them while they are hot. The texture changes a bit when cooled. Still nice, but not as good as fresh-out-of-the-oven. I am still experimenting with techniques, and the EZ Tofu Press is now my favorite tool. Highly Recommended!

Must-have doe tofu fans! Quick, easy, and sturdy.
I ordered this 2 1/2 years ago and tried to make tofu once. I didn’t know how to properly cook it, so I abandoned it. Six months ago I cut meat out of my diet and found a ton of tips and recipes for tofu and this thing is amazing. I freeze firm tofu and slice it in half horizontally and this thing will get an insane amount of water out. My tofu pieces are firm enough to be handled roughly. I can screw it almost entirely shut and the tofu just bounces back up. I can use less marinade because it soaks it up so well - you can really tell when you have a dark marinade. It also takes no time at all vs loading towels and pans and books on your tofu and waiting. This is a great gift for anyone you know who eats tofu - I love it. It is sturdy as heck and has screws and bolts that look nothing like what normally comes on a kitchen gadget. I’m pretty sure they’re bigger and stronger and better quality than the ones holding my refrigerator and oven together.

Life changing
After being vegan for a few years, I finally decided to face my fear of tofu head on lol. After many missteps I had realised the issue was I wasn't getting the water out of the tofu before cooking. So I thought I hated tofu but I really just wasn't doing it right. So I tried again, figured tofu scrambles would be a good place to start and used a recipe from a well known IG vegan blogger using paper towels and several cans piled on top of each other to press the tofu. Success! The dish was delicious, the tofu well pressed and I was IMpressed. After several tries with the paper towel method, I decided to level-up and started looking for a tofu press and this is the one I chose. I have now owned this for nearly a year, use it often and it is perfect! Super easy to use. I use only firm or extra-firm tofu, put it in the press, turn the knobs and leave draining for about 15 minutes though longer isn't a big deal. A TON of water comes out so I get an excellent result every time and no danger of one of those heavy cans rolling off and hurting someone. Really good buy.

Funktioniert wunderbar und sehr stabil
Für meine Zwecke (das Wasser aus dem Tofu zu pressen, damit er beim Braten knuspriger wird) einfach gut. Habe gezögert, 30 Euro sind doch recht viel. Denselben Zweck erfüllen auch zwei Schneidbretter, auf denen man z.b. Konservendosen stapelt. Nachdem mir aber beim letzten Mal der Eimer mit dem Vogelfutter beim Pressen vom oberen Brett gerutscht ist und sich in der Küche verteilt hat: dann doch das Geld investiert. Klappt prima und das Teil ist auch stabil und hält bestimmt lange. In die Spülmaschine kann es auch. Beim Pressen stellt man es hochkant auf einen Teller, so läuft das Wasser noch besser ab als bei Marke Eigenbau. Schneller geht es auch, in 10-15 Minuten hat man es fertig, Vorher musste man eine Stunde ungefähr fürs Pressen rechnen. Bin echt froh, mich für das "teure" Teil entschieden zu haben.

If you love tofu you need one of these...
I bought this because I was sick of using up heaps of kitchen paper and then having to wring it out and dispose of it. I also got rather fed up with trying to find sufficiently heavy things the right size to use on top of a block of tofu. This is a very simple design that is easy to clean. You can see what is going on whilst you press the tofu and get the consistency you prefer by tightening or loosening the wing nuts. I like to make crispy tofu with a satay peanut sauce and can now get my tofu sufficiently crispy on the outside. The taste it also richer. I also use it for fajitas and a very cynical carnivore friend (I am vegan) ate them and said they were absolutely delicious. Much less messing around than trying to do it without this gadget and much quicker, too. Although I'd rather it were a little cheaper it is well-made and sturdy. Can't imagine being without it now.

A great product
This is a great and simple tofu press. Also because of it's design if you're patient you can press out a lot more water if your intention is to then marinate it or you can leave a little more water for recipes that call for a more moist tofu. Overall a great and simple tofu press.
