Black Drawing Salve in a Jar!
Many are used to getting the "tried and true" Black Drawing Salve, Ichthammol in a tube. My earliest memories are of the Druggist scooping it into a a small round tin and labelling it. With Ichthammol being more difficult to find at local Drug Stores, I'm glad to get this "industrial size". It seems to last forever and is a medicine cabinet staple.A glob on a band-aid strategically placed on bug bites, boils or splinters, softens the boo-boo and brings the splinter, stinger or pus to the surface usually within 24 hours. Just be aware the oily, tarry salve WILL STAIN clothes, bedding etc. and NEEDS to be covered.Through the years we've used this on both humans and animals, it works well. My Dad, a carpenter, seemed to always have a deep splinter, us kids with boils, pets with ailments kept my parents doctoring us. You didn't go to the REAL doctor until their treatments failed...I lived to tell about it and treat my kid too !!!

Human use good but with a warning
I was so tired of dealing with clogged pores in my face and have been able to clear my skin up by giving up dairy but there were still pores that weren't breakouts but just clogged. I was using this on my face at night and it made my skin so soft and made my clogged pores practically express themselves. Obviously this one is for horses, but other suggestions and reviews said that people were using it. Works great but I must warn for human use and maybe horses out in the hot sun ***It says keep away from extreme heat.I had it on my face the night before and washed it off in the late morning. My son had a soccer game that day and it was October. I guess it left residue behind (considering its oily, odds are it left some grease in my skin). After half an hour in the sun my face felt like it was on fire. I got the worse sunburn (or chemical burn) on my face in that short time in the sun. Within that half hour I had to excuse myself and I told my friend my face hurt. SHe said I was bright red. I got in my car and couldn't believe it! I won't be doing that again. Now I just spot treat and it's when I won't be in the sun at all! Take caution with the sun when using this product, it makes you more sensitive or causes a chemical burn in reaction to the heat....not sure which.

My little girls decided it would be fun to get my box of toothpicks and throw them around their room like confetti. I went in their room to check on them during their nap and found the mess and my one heal stepped onto one of the toothpicks stuck in the carpet sticking straight up. I turned as I stepped too so it dug in deep! I was terrified and already I was starting contractions with my fourth little girl. I was so upset! I was planning a homebirth with my midwife and I could just see having to go into the ER and them finding out I was in labor and making me stay (This has happened before with my first when I went into the ER for something unrelated and they made me stay until they gave me a shot to stop the labor, which did nothing but make my baby's heart rate go crazy and slowed the labor down till I got home where the labor started right back up again.) Anyways didn't want to deal with ER doctors during my labor again for sure so first we tried digging it out and that was just way too painful and it wouldn't budge, so I got on Amazon looking for the salve my mom had when I was growing up for splinters. I guess it's not sold anymore, but I thankfully found this! It came in the mail the day before my little girl was born. I slapped it on and continued laboring. I did wash it off before I got in the birth pool as I didn't want it touching that baby or getting in the water at all, but after she was born I put it back on again. I watched it carefully for signs of infection as I knew then I would probably need to get medical help. It took about a week later, thankfully I was already laying in bed to heal from the birth, and finally that toothpick tip came to the top of my skin and I could squeeze it out. It was gross for sure, but my foot healed fine after that. I'm not a doctor and I'm not telling anyone to do this based on my experience. I'm not responsible for anything you decide to do, but this is what I chose as I really didn't want to deal with a Dr cutting the toothpick out of me. I'm thankful. Don't know if it would have come out on it's own anyways or not, so I guess I can't completely say this salve helped, but it seemed to.

Great!!! Contains Ichthammol ointement
Contains Ichthammol ointment that is almost impossible to find. Great for drawing out slivers, etc. Cannot find it for people any more. Dad used to use it on his toes for ingrown toenails to get rid of the infection. An old time remedy. It is black like tar, but works great!!! Just be sure and use a band aid to cover it, so that it does not get on clothes or bedding. I used it to draw out the remnants of a rose thorn that we could not see. We dug and dug to try and get it out, but were just making it worse. The thorn made my finger infected and very painful. In 3 days of putting this on, the infection went away, and it drew out the remnants of the thorn.

Not the USP version and not effective as a drawing salve
First off, I don't like giving anyone a bad review. I received this a week early and am happy with the fast shipping from this third party seller. Contrary to what I've heard, there is no strong smell with this - no smell at all actually, although all other black ointments I've tried had.I bought it for its 20% ichthammol (a sulfonated shale oil ), which is the same thing as the active ingredient listed (ammonium bituminosulphonate). Other listed ingredients are anhydrous lanolin and Amber Petrolatum (petroleum jelly/Vaseline). The jar does not say where this was manufactured, and there is a huge difference between that made in China and that in the US. The Chinese version is not in line with the definition given for this substance in the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP). The Chinese material is derived from vegetable oils (e.g. soybean oil) instead of bituminous schists. As such, its chemical basis is totally different from the one of Ichthammol USP. The characteristic bitumen-like odor (originating from the bituminous source material) is missing with Chinese material and thereby the effectiveness. So the fact that there is no odour in this product is worrying as is the fact that 'USP' appears nowhere on the label. It is not yet clear whether this has any effectiveness, since it is sold as a 'grooming aid' rather than a medicinal salve. I'm going to try a different product.--------------------------------------------------------------------Update: I was about to return it but decided instead to give it fair try. Seriously, it seemed mostly vaseline/petroleum jelly. I gave it ten days on a cyst - it's marketed as a drawing salve after all - and in that time with liberal application and changing the loose dressing (it needs some air) twice daily, not a single thing changed. There is no place of manufacture on the label. It says it was manufactured 'for' a company in Kentucky and not 'by' a company in Kentucky and that one word makes all the difference. Perhaps this is a different formula that the ones that got rave reviews on .com. The seller was miffed that I asked it were Chinese made and insisted it's the real thing, that is was made in Kentucky and not China and that they took the smell out because customers complained. I doubt that very much; the animals wouldn't care and owners either as long as it worked. I cannot recommend it. There might be enough lanolin in it to treat cracked paw pads or heels, but a drawing salve it is not. This is my experience and evaluation only. Perhaps others have had better luck, but check the date their reviews were written because the manufacturer may have changed since then. Or get a sample directly from Neogen first.

Not thrilled. Doesn't seem to be proper Icthammol (but I haven't done a scientific materials analysis). It has no odour suggesting it is the Chinese version which doesn't have the same drawing properties.
