Works Great! Love it!
This is a great product. Compact and produces a lot of heat...and quickly. I previously bought a double electric burner from Target that barely got water to a boil, and then couldn't keep the water even close to boil without a lid on the pot. Also, that one took nearly 10 minutes to heat up. THIS single, coil burner heats up very quickly. I'm convinced it's the coil styles that work best. The burners with flat surfaces just don't heat well. I returned the double burner, which was way too bulky anyway, and am THRILLED with this product. I used to travel a lot and used single burners for my hotel rooms. I bought one this time because I'm remodeling my kitchen and need the burner to exist. While you'll never get the power (heat) as you would from a full size stove, especially if you're used to gas, this is a dependable item. I recommend the product to anyone who is in need of a burner.

Used for Hookah Coals
Let me say that I've had 3-4 different types of electric single burners & this one has been the best for my needs.Gets hot quicklyVery durableI use the burner to light coconut coals for smoking hookah. This is the cleanest way to light coals, no gas, butane, etc...My first burner (walgreens) started to come apart @ the coil with 4 weeks of daily use, but I was still able to use it for 3 months.I have had similar problems with other burners because there coating for the coil was thinner (or something like that)This burner has seen daily use for 3 months now & hasn't started to come undone. Now the coals are rough so they "sand away" the coating for any coil, but this burner has kept up the best.If you're looking for a hookah burner, this is it. you will always need to replace something like this if the use will be rough, but I promise this will last you longer than many other burners out therep.s. boiled a kettle for my tea recently & it worked great!

Continental Hot Plate Good For the Price
I've owned two of these that were sold under the Walmart house brand. They don't last long (between 1-2 years) but they were cheap when Walmart sold them (less than $10). After a year's use they look like crap (you can't remove the burner to clean the top. All brands seem to be that way) so I didn't feel too badly about them dying and having to throw them away. Now that Walmart doesn't sell them the price seems to have creeped up to about 2 times as much. I just ordered another and I'm not going to be as OK to have it die in a year, since now it's about twice as much $! Nevertheless, while they work, they work good. I liked the way it heats up very quickly and cools down pretty quickly, too. It gets red hot and will stay hot. It is also able to be set on a very low warming temp. One odd thing I noticed, but I'll bet it's true of all brands of hotplates...if it's in a very cold room (winter in Florida...45*)...even if the hot plate is set to "Off," it will come on! I discovered this when some plastic plates I left sitting on top of it were melted. One morning very early, I saw it turn on, too. So watch out for that little issue with any hot plate.I just bought a Sylvania 1,000 watt hot plate, but I don't like it. It's too slow. It cycles off too much and it's white so it'll get nasty looking quickly. I decided to get another Continental and relegate the Sylvania to an outdoor kitchen area that's less used. I also have an Aroma hot plate that's 800 watts. I don't care for it at all. It takes way too long to get hot and then way to long to get cool. It has the solid steel burner instead of the coil type....too much mass. It's ok for something that you want to cook for 25 minutes or more as it will maintain a pretty even heat. But it's too time consuming for quick cooking--stir-fry and the like, which is mostly what I do.One more note about the Continental... This time when it died I took it apart (easy) to find out why it broke. Where the elec. wire attaches to the burner it's just a cheap little quick connect. It seems to have gradually sizzled itself into oblivion. I think it could be fixed by soldering the wire directly to the burner, but I haven't tried it yet. If that works, I'll keep it as a back-up.Oct. 1, 2011: I've been using the new hotplate for four months and don't like it as well as the one that died. When turned on high, the new one cycles off too much, so it takes a lot longer to boil water. I guess it's "hit or miss" getting one that always cooks good and fast.

continental 1100 watt burner sustainability?
My first burner of this type after three months of use the heating element outer casing cracked open leaving the internal active heating element exposed and in a dangerous condition.I replaced this heater by another of the same make and after two months experienced the same problem of the outer casing of the heating element cracking open and leaving the internal element exposed this time so badly that the unit exploded with a big flash,,, luckily I was not hurt.Other than this weakness the unit had worked quite well, however in its present design the burner element is not suitable for sustainability and unless the maker of these burners improve the ruggedness of the heater element outer casing then they will continue to fail,,,,,, and fail very quickly. I presently do not recommend these burners.Needless to say I will not puchase further units of this model in their present state.

Seems to work well, based on initial use.
This is my initial review of this product.Since I just received it today, I can't speak to the durability of the unit, but can at least offer my initial observations. The unit was shipped to me in the manufacturer's packaging, which really wasn't designed for shipping. It should have been placed inside a larger box prior to shipping.Thankfully, it arrived intact.Things to keep in mind about this unit:It is equivalent in size to your average *small* stove burner, intended for use with small to medium sized pots and pans.Although it is rated for 1100 watts, it is still at least 150 watts lower in wattage than your typical 6" stove burner.Using a 2 quart metal pot, it took about 8 minutes to bring 48 ounces of water to a decent boil. It continued to boil after pasta was added, though it didn't really reach a true "rolling boil".However, it was still adequate for proper cooking.Overall, this unit should be ok for smaller cooking tasks.Look for a 1500-1800 watt unit, if you plan on boiling large amounts of water.Enjoy !

The price
Had bought a double hot plate for my smoker, would not hold temperature, now this single burner hot plate works great at keeping temperature in the smoke house, will buy again

Doesn't maintain Temp.
Seen review saying you get what you pay for, should have listened. Heats up fast but does not maintain a temperature. Keeps turning off and cooling down to much before turning on again.

Just ok
Body of appliance is plastic. Takes a very, very long time to heat water as it liked to cycle off - likely because it doesn't want to melt itself. But, you get what you pay for and it worked well enough.

If you minimally know how to cook you'll be fine.
It's small. Doesn't stay on more than 15 minutes at a time. Temp is either on or off basically so high or nothing. Listen, If you have any cooking skills you'll be fine... i'm using this temporarily waiting on my oven/stove. It does the job. Don't get if you're planning to make big meals that require long periods of stove top cook time.Things i was able to make with this :Grilled cheesePasta dish for 5 peopleEggsRamenBoil water for tea etcCoffee with italian coffee makerWorth the price for sure. def a deal.
