Shows how to draw first with graphite pencils and then with colored pencils with illustrations.
I always wanted to draw and this shows you from the very beginning what supplies to get and how to draw with graphite pencils and then colored pencils. It has how to pictures and how to draw them. Lee is a very talented artist and gives classes and does forensic drawing for the police and NASA and is at Rookery Bay which is an animal preserve.

Not for beginners
The book has well written chapters but for me as a complete beginner I found it a waste of time. I need a book that will hold my hand and start me on early level lessons. Once I get experience the book will be useful but for now it is a waste.

Great instructions from beginners to advanced.
As an intermediate drawing enthusiast, I find Lee Hammond's instructions clearly written. I've added this great book to the top of my books for when I need a little more insight on getting the proportions exactly right. The colorwork section is especially interesting as I progress from black and white drawings.

Gorgeous book
This is an aspirational book for me. I have achieved a sort of competence with several beginners' books. I can now actually draw individual items that not only look like what they are supposed to be, but as if an adult drew them. I have no individual style yet, but I never expected to achieve the level I have now. So, I am moving ahead, still working in graphite, but planning, soon I hope, to try working with colored pencils. The way this book is laid out looks as if it might take me through the transition.

Wonderful bonus surprise
I owned Lee Hammond's book on pencil drawing and learned much from it. It disappeared from my collection. I bought this book to replace the old book and as introduction to colored pencils. I was happily surprised to find the section on pencil drawing wasn't the old book but rewritten with new exercises and examples. Looking into getting into the colored pencil section as well as doing some of the pencil exercises. The only disappointment (thus the 4 rating) is the colored pencil section uses a full set of 120 pencils instead of a smaller set like my set of 24.
