I've tried pretty much every period product out there (pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and menstrual discs) and i use them all. sometimes I even use two products together (pad+tampon my go to duo), depending on where I'm going and how heavy my flow is that day. there isn't one perfect option for every situation, and I switch between them depending on what I'm doing. the first time I tried the flex menstrual disc was before a brazilian laser hair removal appointment. i knew a tampon or menstrual cup would technically be fine, but I still wasn't comfortable with the possibility of the tampon string or the little stem of the menstrual cup being visible. even though the cup sits higher inside the body, the stem can sometimes peek out when your pelvic muscles are relaxed, like when you're lying on your back in the butterfly position. since the menstrual disc sits differently and doesn't have anything hanging outside the body, it seemed like the perfect solution. I inserted the disc around 8 a.m. before heading to work and completely forgot it was there. i went through my entire workday, had my laser appointment later that afternoon, and everything went perfectly. it was comfortable, completely invisible, and I never felt like it was there. i was honestly impressed. the only downside came later. i got home around 6 p.m., and the second I got out of my car, it suddenly started leaking. it was honestly a disaster and pretty disappointing. looking back, though, I had been wearing the same disc for about 10 hours on a fairly heavy-flow day, so I probably just pushed it past its limit. even though discs can hold a lot, they're not magic. on heavier days, they still need to be emptied or changed regularly. i also have to mention that inserting and removing a menstrual disc can be pretty messy, especially on heavier days. unlike a tampon, you're definitely going to get your fingers dirty. removal can also be tricky because the disc sits tucked into a small pocket just behind your pubic bone. if it gets pushed a little farther back than usual, it can be difficult to reach the rim with your finger to hook it and pull it out. one thing I kept hearing before trying a menstrual disc was that you can have sex while wearing one. of course, I had to test it. i'll be honest, it didn't work out the way I expected. based on my experience, I think it might work for some couples, especially if your partner is smaller or if your anatomy is different. the disc kept getting pushed farther inside. with penetration, the disc kept getting pushed farther inside so I could barely reach it afterward. removing it became much more difficult than usual, and honestly, the whole experience wasn't worth it. if you're buying a menstrual disc mainly because you've heard you can have mess-free period sex with it, I'd keep your expectations realistic. I've also seen a lot of people say that menstrual discs help reduce period cramps. personally, I can't really agree or disagree with that because I usually don't get menstrual cramps, so I didn't notice any difference. overall, I'm really glad I tried the flex menstrual disc. it has become another option, especially for situations where I don't want a visible tampon string or menstrual cup stem. It's comfortable, holds a lot, and once you get used to inserting and removing it, it's easy to wear. just be mindful of how long you've had it in on heavy-flow days.

First off, I’ve been using both cups and menstrual discs for years. They. Are. The. Best. I bought light “period underwear” for small leaks which I only have to use on my heaviest days. More on that later. Both cups and discs are cramp-free. Read that again. No more cramps. I don’t know the magic but if cramps ruin your life this information might just save it. Totally worth the learning curve! You also shouldn’t feel them while you are wearing them. If you do, you should try a different one, since not all discs/cups are created equal! I started my journey with another brand of discs which I could feel and leaked frequently. This one is the best one I’ve personally tried, but know if you’re built differently then perhaps this one might be problematic for you, while another brand works perfectly. Don’t be afraid to experiment. For heavy bleeders: discs are great for those first couple of days or so. They self-empty when you go to the bathroom, which means you don’t have to ever switch out period products ever again in public bathrooms. Truly, you only need take it out at the end of the day and replace it with a new one! Easy peasy. Beginner friendly since they are disposable. No washing or sterilizing like the cup requires. I know that really grosses out some people. Just toss it. Downside is, you will have to buy them monthly just like most other period products. Not so with the cup (there are discs designed to be reused as well but I do not personally have experience with them, and this review is about this disposable one anyway). Let’s talk disc leakage. It should be minor, unless it gets dislodged during a restroom break. This is my biggest frustration with discs. Sometimes it’s good, but it’s recommended to check its placement after using the bathroom since it sometimes gets out of its place. If you don’t catch it, then it won’t do it’s job. Since they are designed to empty out you may find they might leak with, say, a badly timed sneeze or cough even if it’s in properly. Even so, a light back up pad is normally all you need in such circumstances unless it was very full to begin with. If you feel a leak starting, head to the bathroom. Most of the time that means it is overfull. A light liner is usually all you need for these leaks if caught right away. To sum up: discs are not totally leak-free, but that is actually what makes them so amazing for heavy bleeders, since they freely “leak” into the toilet. Unfortunately they can shift during that process so it’s not totally set-and-forget it, either. Oh wait. Period sex? There is DEFINITELY a learning curve with this. Not so much leak-wise (though I wouldn’t try it if it’s full), but the guy can feel it. Keep that in mind and start slow. There was a BIG difference in this area between this brand and the other one I have tried. This one wasn’t as “sharp”, although hubby is still not a fan so I’m not sure I can recommend it. Cups! Cups are virtually leak-free in every sense with the proper fit. They are not nearly as “one-size-fits-all”: shorter, taller, wider, skinnier, firmer, and softer versions means you may have to try multiple brands and styles before you find one that’s perfect for you. With a proper fit, you should not be able to feel it. They do not self-empty, which means you have to take them out, dump them, and reinsert if they get full. However, in my experience by day 2 or 3 you can easily go all day without having to dump it. I’m a heavy bleeder. If you are a light bleeder, you should be able to use the cup from day 1 for a leak-free period. Outside of the initial “cavity blood” making its way out (the stuff that was already there before you put the cup in - quite minor), you could honestly go without a liner and be good all day as long as your bleeding isn’t heavy enough to fill it up. After day 2 or 3, I normally do this myself. I wear regular underwear and not even a liner for back up. That’s how leak-free it is. With a cup, there should be no sign of your period until you dump it out at the end of the day. No cramps, no blood. 5 stars. You do have to wash it, so “dealing with it” is messier in that sense, maybe. They say to boil it on a stove to sterilize it between cycles, but I find throwing it in the dishwasher works great (it’s only after I’ve already washed it, but if that freaks you out then do what makes you comfortable). I recommend owning at least two cups to let them “breathe” between uses: I don’t personally use the same one non-stop for 7 days even with proper washing habits if I can avoid it. To sum up: I hand down prefer cups over discs on lighter days, because I can completely forget about it all day. No “reminders” when I go use the bathroom. On heavy days, I sometime do a cup, sometimes I do discs. A disc and light liner is easy to keep in your car or purse if you’re caught off-guard while you’re out. That’s it! These have saved me so many times!! I was worried at first because I have an IUD, but have never had any issues with it. I’ve hated having to estimate how many tampons to bring with me either at work or on a trip, but these keep it so simple for me. They’re easy to use, but can be a little messy if you have a heavy flow and it’s self emptying. Overall, my go to every month!

I have been using this disc for 4 cycles. The first time, it was difficult for me to get it right. But once I got it 'right' I loved it. With tampons I'd have to change them every hour for the first couple of days. It was so nice not to be bothered by going to the bathroom every freaking hour with the disc. The second and third cycle was great, very minimal leakage. The 4th cycle, it's been a nightmare. I was awoken at 4 AM this morning needing to change it out. By 8 AM I was leaking BAD, and again about 12PM. I don't know if my flow is heavier this 4th go around but I have been frustrated. I have been irritated with the "mess-free" claim. Bearing down ALWAYS causes it to leak out , and of course it's all over my finger. They claim that you can 'self empty' when you go to the bathroom by bearing down, so how do they claim that bearing down to get it out is 'mess free'? Lucky for me, I've never had to change one while I wasn't home, so I can rinse my hand when I'm done with the messy part. Somehow I always find blood on or around the toilet as well. It drips on its' way to put it in the wrapper to dispose. If I put the wrapper in my underwear to dispose of the disc, it would just get blood all over the underwear. I've had to start cleaning the toilet when I'm done to ensure no blood is left behind. That has bee the downfall for EVERY 4 cycles I've used it for. I'm beginning to think mess free isn't possible with any product. I like the ease of not having to change it so often (twice a day), but after this last time, that may change.

If you’re nervous, buy it anyway. I’m in my mid 40’s and hesitated too long. I finally took the leap about a year ago and never looked back. Perimenopause brought a heavy flow, terrible cramps, and the need for more than a box of tampons and pads each month. I was miserable. But, once I started using flex discs, my cramps reduced, I’m saving money and keeping my sanity. I change it twice a day- once in the shower and once out. On my heaviest days, I usually wear a panty liner just in case, but I haven’t had any leaks because it self-eliminates throughout the day. It’s amazing and I wish I had found it decades ago. If you’re on the fence, just buy a box and try it. You’ll wish you had tried it sooner.

Edit: Now that my period is over I can say that, unfortunately, I cannot complete forego wearing pads. I have heavy periods and dysmenorrhea, so on my heaviest days, this slowed down the blood flow and eased my cramps, but it was not as carefree as the first day I tried it. Maybe over time I will perfect the positioning and get a better seal, but I put the discs pretty far up and let the rim rest behind my pubic bone as instructed. I think I will continue using these since they did allow me to change pads less often and they eased my cramps a little bit. But it's not the miracle product I hoped it would be. Still would recommend giving it a try! Original review (5 stars): As someone who has dealt with heavy, painful periods since I was 12 years old, I've struggled to find products that allow me to experience my period comfortably. I tried the diva cup, period underwear, and super absorbent tampons, but none of those options worked well enough for me to forego wearing pads. I gave up and figured that using extra-long, overnight pads would be the best I could hope for. Then, as I was browsing the other day, I impulsively decided to try these since I was intrigued by the great views and the claim of the cup "self-emptying" when you use the toilet. I'm only on my 1st day of my period with a disc in, but not a single drop has leaked out since I put it in 4 hours ago. Typically, I have to change overnight pads every 2 hours to avoid bleeding through, so I'm truly stunned things are starting off so well! I also have had no cramps thus far and I haven't taken any painkillers. It feels like I'm not even on my period. I will come back to update my review once my period is over, but so far, I'm very happy and already looking forward to buying the reusable one!

I've been working as a nurse in Women's Healthcare for the past 12 years and I have made it a goal to try all different kinds of menstrual products on the market to better advise my patients based on personal experience. I have tried just about everything, but I dragged my feet on trying the disc because it honestly seemed like the least appealing option. I feared that the removal would be difficult. I finally ended up trying a Flex Disposal Disc that came with the Flex Cup I bought a while back and I loved it SO MUCH that I ended up buying more! (I also bought the Flex Reusable Disc). These are a pretty decent price considering that each one lasts a full 12 hours for me with moderate flow. The material is a flexible, plastic that folds/bends for easy insertion. As the manufacturer claims, the benefit is that its less likely to alter your normal pH and bacteria growth than tampon material so it is a good option from a vaginal health standpoint. Also, the studies show that TSS is extremely rare with proper use (I couldn't find any data that a menstrual disc has ever lead to TSS, just a few rare cases from the cup). The dome part of the disc is like a durable plastic bag and it collapses to make insertion easier. The disposable discs don't have a notch like the reusable one, but I don't think the notch makes any difference for me personally and they are super easy to insert. INSERTION: the instructions that come with it are very detailed and helpful. No need to wash the reusable ones. Just open the package, bend the disc like a little taco and insert it like a tampon (through trial and error, I've found that a downward angle towards the tail bone places it properly without leaking). I have to use 2 hands to help keep it from opening while inserting, but even when it opens too early it doesn't hurt or impact anything. Just pinch it back closed and keep at it. Once it's in, I take my thumb on my left hand to push it up behind my pubic bone (the landmark is easy to find by doing it this way). WEAR: I wear these for my whole 12 hour busy/active shift, regardless of whether my flow is light or heavy, and I have NEVER experienced any leaks! If you bear down when you use the bathroom, just push it back behind your pubic bone after because it can move, but mostly this shouldn't be an issue. I don't feel the disc at all and I don't even think about my period for the whole 12 hours. REMOVAL: This was my biggest fear since I had A LOT of trouble with removing menstrual cups (not the Flex Cup). Just insert an index finger, hook it around the rim, and pull. So easy! I have also personally never had any mess. It is all contained in the disc. Then just discard it. CUP VS DISC: I loved my Flex Cup.. it definitely had a learning curve at first but the 12 hour wear and easy removal tab made it convenient, environmentally friendly, and comfortable. After I had my baby, it just never worked the same regardless of the cup size. It would leak and I ended up wearing a pad all day just in case which defeated the environmentally friendly part. The disc has all the same advantages as the cup, except there is no pull tab to worry about so it's more comfortable, insertion is more comfortable for me because of the discs flexibility and thin plastic, and I don't experience leaks anymore. REUSABLE VS DISPOSABLE: I'm not sure why, but the disposable discs are less likely to leak for me. Maybe it's because the plastic is more rigid than the silicone but I prefer these disposable ones when I know I NEED to have a leak free day (like when I work 12 hour shifts and am not guaranteed a bathroom break!). I know this is a long review, but if anyone is like me and dragging their feet about buying a disc, I want to be an advocate! This thing has changed the game for me, and I have tried it all. I wish I had tried it sooner because I can't imagine using anything else now. Hope this helps!

Can I have my purple plastic packaging back please?? 😫😭 I love these discs, they work wonderfully. A little weird to get used to at first, but they are pretty much all I use now. It’s great. However, these used to come in wonderful little purple plastic wrappers that were perfect for disposal (only thing I would add is maybe a sticker or something to seal it) that way you don’t have a crime scene in your bathroom trash can, but my most recent package has brown paper wrappers and while they do still conceal the mess to some degree, they don’t open near as nicely as the plastic ones did and they tend to tear so that the mess seeps out and it’s just gross. I just want my purple plastic baggies back 😭. Otherwise this would be getting 5 stars because I have crazy heavy periods and these things are seriously a game changer.

Definitely give these a try! I love these because it feels like you’re not on your period at all, just make sure you place it properly at the cervix! Pretty easy to learn!

I bought the disposable discs because they were advertised as ‘mess-free period s.x’ and ‘barely noticeable.’ Honestly, I don’t see how that could be true. The ring is large, tall, and rigid, and both my partner and I could feel it, very uncomfortable. That said, I still find it a better alternative to tampons.

Awkward. Uncomfortable. Will stick with a proper cup. Definitely can’t be used for intimate times during ones period, to avoid the messy clean up, as it has been suggested.. the ring is like the top off a juice container lol..

So much better than tampons! More comfortable. You can use the bathroom. Not as much suction as a cup, so more comfortable to put in and get back out. Much easier to get out again. And it can stay in place for hours. A genius invention! Edit: I am finding on really heavy days I’m getting quite a bit of leakage which I am a bit baffled about
