I bought this for my grand daughter. She is too young for it now, but a copy was place in her honor in my school library and wanted her to have her own copy of it.

cute story! wish there was more emphasis on it being okay for main character to wear what she wants, instead of wearing what everyone else wants her to

You're Wearing That...
My four year old enjoys this book. The pictures are lovely and brightly colored. Since she's starting Kindergarten soon, she enjoys any story about starting school. After reading this book we talked about "being yourself" and that you don't have to change for people to like you.

Bad friend message
I got this book as a gift, and I can't stand reading it to my daughter. She likes the pictures and the little mouse. It is pretty and fun to look at. However, the mouse Tiny, the main character's "best friend", spends the entire book telling her what she can and can't do, basically telling her all the reasons why she's not good enough the way she is... how she'll get picked on in school for being herself. I get what the author was going for....he was trying to help her fit in at school. The message is ok at the end, but misses. All of her classmates like her for who she is. But Tiny never seems to learn HIS lesson. Despite putting her down through the entire book, she still refers to him as her best friend. He's just plain mean. Not something I want my kid learning about friendship.

We love this Penelope!
Penelope has sass and beats to her own drum. Great story to teach independence and creativity despite reservations from others.
