Is this item just for free weights or can the fat gripz be used on machines as well?

Yeah I can't see why it wouldn't, if the handle or grip is the same diameter as standard or Olympic free weights I can't see being an issue, if anything it would be an advantage to you, but don't forget to go slightly lighter than you'd normally go, because by using the Fat Gripz its all about the forearm strength, so its a case of trial and see, thanks for the question.

Will these compress lengthways? I have dumbbells that have a hand grip length of 4.5" and I noticed these are 5" long so probably won't fit?

Mr M, I don't think they would compress lengthways and if they did they might bulge in the middle. Which would be an issue for grip due to the slot cut out for putting over the bars. Depending on your dumbbells you could possible get away with adding washers to space the weights further apart and the taper inside at the edges might accommodate a lip/chamfer.

can someone please honestly do these fit the standard 1 inch bars?

Yes, Fat Gripz are designed to fit a standard olympic barbell which has a 1.1" diameter handle.
