Lee Morgan - Candy - Cd

Energy that lasts
Morgan's "Candy," like Kenny Dorham's "Quiet Kenny," is the only quartet session by the trumpeter. It wears better than some other things I've been listening to ("The Cooker," "City Lights," "The Gigolo"), with Morgan no less impressive on a restrained, tasteful, meditative "All the Way" than on the up-tempo tracks. Also, this is simply an untouchable rhythm section, with Doug Watkins' bass providing its usual vibrant, "living" pulse and rich but not exaggerated sound. If this one is reissued, I'm hoping it's not as another RVG remaster (the spiking of bass and drums, however welcome to younger ears--or, for that matter, to older ears that have begun to lose sensitivity to low and high frequencies--is not necessarily an improvement). This one sounds fine just as it is (and you can hardly beat the current Amazon price).

Lee's Best
"Candy" is not only Morgan's strongest release of the late '50s, it's one of his best ever. Before falling into a pattern of overly accessible funk cliched top selling albums in the early to mid '60s, Morgan had more to prove. Morgan was still with Dizzy's big band when he started cutting tracks for this project."Candy" features the trumpet up front with no other horns, allowing Morgan to stretch out and swing harder on mostly standards."Since I Fell For You" and "All The Way" are haunting ballads. Sonny Clark's piano playing gives these standard ballads a wonderfully mournful touch. Doug Watkins and Art Taylor are incredible and keep the groove swinging on Jimmy Heath's C.T.A. This album has such a distinct feel and mood to it and stands out as one of Blue Notes most endearing releases.

Don't order this.
I ordered this item twice. Both times the cd was defective. We have built in speakers connected to a receiver and a cd deck and we also have a Bose wave music system. My cd player simply skipped the disc. The Bose system rejected it and the screen read "not playable." Same result both times. After the second time, Amazon was very prompt in refunding what I'd paid.

Love It!!!
This is my fifth Lee Morgan CD and I love it. Pure vintage Lee, no doubt. With each CD, you fall in love all over again, so "Candy" is like over the top, love at first note. My favorite is "All the way" makes you feel like a pat of butter on a hot pan, oh, so, so, so mellow and lovely. The sound quality is crisp and you can hear each distinct musician's intrumental contribution to this delight. I wish Lee Morgan is just as well known as Miles Davis, so I feel sad for people who has not discover him yet. I haven't an extensive Lee collection and I like all of them, but by far this my favorite, so if you are new to the fan club, I highly recoment this for a starter but really all of his albums are great.

As Good as it gets
Lee Morgan, composer of the famous jazz tune "Sidewinder" was simply one of the greatest jazz trumpeters who ever lived. He died at a very young age when he was playing a gig. Bewteen sets, his common law wife shot him in the head. Wow, you Americans really love your guns!At any rate, Lee was up there with Clifford Brown & Chet Baker. He could play a beautiful ballad as well as bebop tunes at breakneck tempos. My fav ballad on this album is "All the Way" a tune made famous in the Joe E. Lewis movie. His up tempo of "All at Once You Love Me" is absolutely great;eminded me ofClifford Brown. If you don't have a Lee Morgan album in your collection, it is VERY incomplete.

Best Lee Morgan
For me this is one of Lee's best, if not his best for sure. If you are a jazz trumpet fan of this era or already a Lee Morgan fan, you will NOT be disappointed. Buy it...

Superb trumpet playing from a 19-year-old Lee Morgan in 1957/58.
Trumpeter/composer Lee Morgan(1938-72) was 19 years old and about to join Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers when he recorded this quartet album in Hackensack, New Jersey on November 18, 1957 & February 2, 1958.Morgan is in superb lyrical form with a stellar rhythm section of Sonny Clark(piano); Doug Watkins(bass) & Art Taylor(drums) playing originals by Jimmy Heath and Buddy Johnson plus five standards.Like Kenny Dorham's 'Quiet Kenny', Morgan's 'Candy' was his only quartet session and this overlooked album still sounds fresh over 60 years later.I'd recommend it to any modern jazz fan, especially my fellow reviewer, Ian Thumwood, if he doesn't already own a copy.
