VERY BAD: presentation, source code, structure
I don't like this book:1. this probably is the worse source code structure I have ever seen; lower layer calling into code in higher layers. for example, program in libs calling into presentation layers which sits at upper layer of the source code.2. there is no layers of source code, the logic and source code are spreaded every where and jump a lot. VERY DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW THOUGHTS. The call stack in chapter foru have 11 levels, to just display the category list. My goodness. This book is based on a very messy and unstructured source code.3. the english description is very wording4. the source code uses smarty, bringing another level of complexity; should just just mvc5. hate the organization of the book; source code are listed in fragments, and explanation are separated in every where and repeating. I wish they could do source code toghether in a few pages, and the description also together in its own pages.6. I do not recommend buying this book.

Awesome book sofar
I recognize the possible frustration in some of the reviews, however, it is not the book but my competence that caused most hiccups I experienced.I recommend to carve out enough time to go through all the excercises and type it all yourself (no shortcuts) to come to a thorough understanding, the book covers a lot of ground. As you type, the "karate kid" effect kicks in and you start seeing the light. I did get in trouble debugging because the code covers a lot of different applications so error messages are pretty cryptic. I ended up creating a little test page that calls all the PHP libraries where you can test all the functions (with ECHO). There are probably better ways todo this... Perhaps a few pointers on debugging would have swayed some single star raters....or mabye not...The structure of the shop is really good, the end of the day it will be easy to maintain by someone without a degree in computer science.

Excellent Introduction to Smarty, PDO, OOP
This book is a wonderful introduction for procedural PHP developers looking over the fence at Object Oriented Programming. Although I'm not yet ready to go live with OOP after reading this book, it has moved my learning curve forward considerably and rapidly. Read and study every word and line of code carefully, and you will not be disappointed. If/when you get stuck at chapter 4, keep at it. It's your Smarty that needs work. Once you start creating sub-queries (in chapter 5, I recall), you will need to move your work to a LAMP or MAMP environment. Sub-queries don't work in Windows MySQL installations. This is an issue Mr. Darie addresses on his web site.Good luck and enjoy the ride! This book is pure gold!

Excellent reference text for learning PHP within a framework
The first time I came across this text was several years ago when I was asked to build a website and needed to learn PHP. I managed to complete the project with very few errors. I also fell in love with the Smarty templating engine used. Decided to get my own copy so I can use it as a reference. Thanks so much to the authors. With regard to delivery it was on time and shrinkwrapped! Nice job!

This book is obsolete
I bought this book online and I did learn a good deal about php, mysql and developing the website. However if you want to customize your site using code from this book it is a waste of time. I spent 4 months on and off trying to customize my site based on this book and gave up. Then I found Drupal and recreated my work in 2 weeks. So save yourself time, effort and tears and learn a content management system like Drupal. This book is obsolete.

Loved it!
Really enjoyed this book! A great overall treatment of building an ecommerce site. I think if you're hoping to simply copy and paste all the code from this book and create a site - you're better off simply using one of the free ecommerce apps out there. But if you're willing to take the ideas in this book and modify them to build your own proprietary ecommerce site (so it does EXACTLY what you need it to do) then this is a great resource!

Be careful if you are on a windows based machine!
Be very careful with this book if you are on a windows based machine. There is a PHP bug noted on page 150. Unfortunately, no reliable fix or work around is noted anywhere. The fix noted on the errata sheet does not help the matter. Furthermore, there are many forums discussing the problem, but none of them offer a viable solution. The book could be worth four stars if this problem were actually addressed. The author new about the problem, but failed to offer a viable solution to people working on a windows based machine. All they had to do was create a different approach to making multiple queries to the database. What a disappointment.

This book is NOT very good
The tutorial process in this book broke down by chapter 4, which only covers the very simple first steps. After spending 2-3 days researching and resoolving the bug(s), I finally moved on to chapter 5, and have now discovered that there is an inherent bug with the database implementation used / recommended by the author, and that I am unlikely to progress further.Hilariously the database stored procedure cache bug only exists on the windows platform which the author has based the entire tutorial on, and the bug is even documented in Chapter 5, which states that a solution can be found in the books on-line Errata page. It is not. I have submitted an Errata report to the publisher, but have heard nothing, and the page remains blank. The book also contains much repetition and advocates the use of a lot of 3rd party PHP extensions and tools rather than pursue a much more sensible basic low level code approach.Don't waste your money on this.
