Tri-ArtArtist Mediums, 1000ml, Black Gesso

The good part. The gesso is good quality. Deep black with good coverage. Cleans up pretty well. Now the bad part. If you are not prepared to transfer the gesso to a different container don't buy this product. There are lots of good gessos out there. The lid is very hard to grip and it is very flexible. It does not want to come off. I had to use a lid opener to get it off and even that was a struggle. Messing with the lid is a gesso all over the house disaster waiting to happen. Once you get it off, it is practically impossible to get it back on. The threads don't click in and you get continuous misalignments which of course make you have to get the lid off again. The lid is unusable. It is just too much trouble and there is too much danger of the gesso getting out of the container as you try to open it to justify the savings in cost. I give it 4 stars for the gesso and -2 for the container and lid.

This is a great black gesso! It is so pigmented that it will cover in just one coat. It also has the perfect amount of tooth to let paint adhere to it and not be too coarse or gritty. Some gessos are too slick and plastic-feeling for good paint adhesion, but this one gets it just right. The only slight problem I had with this gesso was that it was difficult getting all that black washed out of my brushes because it has just so much carbon black pigment in it!I have also been using this gesso (when applied very smoothly) with colored pencils and pastels. It has a finer tooth than Golden's Absorbent Ground and Golden's Ground for Pastels and more tooth than Golden's Gesso.

I painted on white canvas, used 2 coats and great coverage.
