Review: Excellent Biography Told From First Person Point-of-View - Having worked in education as a Librarian for so long, I have come to expect my students to complain when a Biography is assigned for their book report. My son, despite being an avid reader, falls into that same category when it comes to book reports. So, when I came across this Biography told in first person, I decided to purchase it for him to try and avoid the "fight" of making him read and write down what he has learned. Thankfully, I succeeded in finding the perfect story for him. He quickly finished the book in one day and entertained my husband and I with stories about George Washington Carver. Reading the book for myself, I was pleased to find that it didn't gloss over George Washington Carver's life, but took my son in-depth on what made George Washington Carver the person he was and how he contributed to society. The harshness of slavery and the sadness of segregation was discussed from the viewpoint of a person who experienced it first-hand. Instead of being a stated fact, it became a story gloriously woven to open the eyes of my son to the realities of the past. My son was led through George Washington Carvers childhood, successes, failures, accomplishments, education and finally his death and final words. The book now sits in my library happily entertaining the rest of my students when they check it out for their biography book reports.

Great read; bought to read to my grandchildren
I have read this in the past and was happy to find it to read again to my grandchildren. I have enjoyed all or most of the books in the Sower Series. (It has been a while--mostly when my children were young.) This was one of our favorites. It is a fairy tale ending to a true story. God is the best story writer, and this is a story he wrote in the life of a former slave boy turned amazing scientist.

George Washington Carver, Surprising Genius
This book is both thrilling and inspiring. The character of the man comes shining through in the toughest of circumstances. Here you have a black boy befriended by white folks and yet suffering the bias of others who believe black people are beneath them. Carver is not only intelligent and wise, he is highly gifted. He surprised people. He lifted a state from poverty and made strong students out of immature and lazy youth. that is only the beginning of what this man did in his lifetime. Written for children in mind, it would be good for parents to read it to theirs. The Bible was his greatest teacher and God His dearest friend.

awesome book-loose binding
What a great book! Appreciate the perspective of this man who chose to give God glory for his discoveries and in spite of his accomplishments kept a humble attitude and was content, generous and wise. What a rare example for all of us in these days! Though he did experience discrimination because of his color he didn't have a bitterness of heart that tainted him. Refreshing message of a man who was free not only from physical slavery but from the slavery we cling to ourselves if we walk in unforgiveness. His color was never a major theme in the book but it was this fact that broke out of the persecution complex mold so wonderfully. Simple and powerful book, I appreciate it as an adult yet written in interesting story so that it holds the interest of younger readers. If read WITH your child, what a great opportunity to discuss some of the victories he saw and the contentment so rare among other things. He is a true hero!! I did buy used and in spite of the label "very good condition" it had a loose binding with some pages coming out. For a book I want to share, next time I will buy new. And I may buy another...

Wonderful man; great book.
Reading this aloud to 7, 8, 9 year olds. They act like they don't want me to read, but when I say we will come back to this another time they all yell, "More!"

A "must read"!
Every student in the USA should have to read this small volume. That includes every single African-American young person. When a boy studies hard and finds his niche in this world and recognizes the fact that he is a creation of the Almighty and his mind is a gift of God to be used to not only better himself but help to better mankind, this would have a world-wide impact, as it did with George Washington Carver.
