they worked great i use the to cover the pipes on my pool heater so nothing can get in the pips they work great

will these fit over a piece os 1/2' pvc pipe

No the 1/2” PVC is 1/2” inside diameter you would need more like a 3/4” cap for the 1/2” PVC

I am looking for caps to fit iron pipe whose nominal OD is 0.84 inches. Is this size sufficient?

I doubt it highly, you are .09 inches larger than the caps. They are only 3/4" .75 inch

Will these stretch enough to fit a post that is 2 3/8”?

The 2" cap will not stretch on to a 2 3/8" post. Our 2 1/4" cap will stretch to 2 3/8" OD post with a little effort. Here's the link to the 2 1/4" cap. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01L2VTGB4
