Q: Would this be a strong enough cb for listening to close (< 1 mile) truck drivers communicate while on the highway without an added antenna?

I used this in my Ford 450 hot shot for communicating with my escort car during a wide load. I could hear truckers within 200 feet. I heard my escort car perfectly Behind me over 95 feet. You will hear lots of truckers close by while sitting in traffic. Hope this helps.

In the woods it's terrible more like 50 -100 yards. Don't waste your money

You could use a regular cb antenna and coax along with a BNC Male to UHF PL259 Female Coaxial Adapter Connector and the radio would transmit and receive much better. Available for purchase in Amazon.

The way it is with these types of cb radios (they are AM)IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY!
AM- AMPLITUDE MODULATION: The way It Is Figured- A Mile a Watt-4 Watts = 4 MILES!! BUT!!!! THIS IS WITH OUT OBSTRUCTION OF ANY KIND!!!
***I'VE BEEN THERE!!! LUCKY SOMETIMES- HALF A MILE IN THE CITY?
*SUGGESTION!! GMRS OR HAM RADIO!!
of course you need a License!
