A high quality matcha green tea that tastes great.
My wife and I drink this matcha tea every morning with breakfast and have been for perhaps 15-years now. We really miss it when we don’t have it, so much so, that we take it, our matcha bowls, and a bamboo whisk on vacations! It’s not cheap, but the quality is consistently great.

Brilliant green! Worthy substitute for more expensive 1 ounce tins...
I felt like I was taking a leap of faith when I decided to try this. I have been a long time buyer of Eden Organic Matcha, but it was just getting too expensive for me to drink daily using 1/2 to 1 tsp per day. The first replacement I tried out was a "culinary" grade tea by SerendipiTea. I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but figured I would at least be able to put it into smoothies if I totally hated it. I totally hated it. The Eden Matcha was a beautiful, vibrant green while the SerendipiTea was almost brown. Blech. And the flavor....I couldn't even handle it in a smoothie, it tasted like dirt and made everything I put the tea in taste like dirt. I was a little gun shy after that because Matcha is just so expensive and very difficult to find organically grown. The DoMatcha seemed to be my only other option. I am glad I finally took the plunge because it is a good substitute for the Eden brand. I get almost three ounces for a similar price as 1 ounce of Eden. I was happy as soon as I opened the bag inside the tin....the powder is a gorgeous emerald color. It doesn't taste quite as good as the Eden (a bit more pungent and grassy), but it is good and I feel the same sense of vitality and cleansing I got from the Eden tea. I am a happy camper. NOTE: I do not prepare and drink this Matcha in a traditional way. While I love green tea (and tea of all kinds), I drink Matcha specifically for the health benefits of consuming the whole tea leaf and don't muck around with water of a specific temperature and bamboo whisks. I add 1/2 tsp to cool water first thing in the morning in a shaker cup and shake vigorously. To me it is a lovely, frothy way to start my day. I also put a bit in my smoothies.

(Organic) Second Harvest vs First Harvest vs Bigelow Bagged Green Tea
I will compare my experiences with Organic First Harvest DoMatcha, Organic Second Harvest DoMatcha, and "Organic" Bigelow bagged green tea. I have not tried the non-organic DoMatcha teas, nor do I plan to. I'm currently on my 5th tin of Second Harvest DoMatcha and recently finished my second tin of First Harvest DoMatcha. They are both incredibly delicious, creamy, and richly flavored, but there are differences. First Harvest DoMatcha is slightly creamier, slightly less bitter, contains more delicate and diverse flavors, and is absolutely pampering; however, it requires twice the amount of whisking to completely mix it into the water. I never knew anything could make me feel as pampered as when I am eating an organic dark chocolate, but First Harvest does it for me. I buy a tin of First Harvest for special occasions, holidays, or when I just feel that need for extra pampering. I know that something this good for you shouldn't be described as if it were a sinful indulgence, but to me, it certainly feels that way. Second Harvest is excellent for everyday use; it's a part of my morning routine. It's healthy, it's delicious, and it gives you a little caffeine boost. The way I prepare either First or Second Harvest DoMatcha is to mix 1 tsp to 1 tbsp into what is probably about a cup of water but I'm not certain, as I haven't measured the water. What I can say is this: I like it thick, creamy and frothy. I do not add anything to it. When I run out of DoMatcha and am waiting a few days for my next order to come in, I go to my backup: organic bagged green tea (no longer Bigalow brand). I used to drink Bigalow Organic Green Tea daily, but it cannot compare to matcha in any way; it is a far inferior product in terms of flavor, texture, and health benefits. In general, bagged green teas will not be in any way creamy/frothy and will have a lot more bitterness. For green tea lovers, matcha is a huge upgrade that I recommend to anyone. Regarding Bigelow bagged green tea, I eventually learned that the tea actually comes from China, not from their plantation in SC, which greatly angered me because I felt like I had been deceived all that time. The company makes a big deal out of their SC plantation but doesn't sell the teas online or in any stores I have access to. I also learned that anything coming out of China, even if labeled organic, is not healthy due to unavoidable exposure to toxins and pollutants that run rampant in the air, soil, and water.

Merely okay
To a true matcha connoisseur, this matcha really is not really 2nd Harvest but more like "second-rate", or even third rate. It's not bad, but you need to know what you're getting. Quality: To my mind there are three grades of matcha, in order of both quality and price. There's ceremonial grade matcha, which is expensive and top-quality. There's sushi grade, called that because it's the decent-quality stuff you'd get at a sushi place and most people will drink this grade on a daily basis since it's more cost-effective. Then there's food grade- matcha that's only good in lattes or as an ingredient such as if you make matcha ice cream. DoMatcha 2nd Harvest is definitely "food grade". It's not really all that pleasant on its own. The lower quality the matcha, the deeper the color, and the more bitter the flavor. People new to matcha are probably going to scoff at the color remark, because of how vivid the color is- trust me, top-quality matcha is as strikingly neon green as the label on this product. If a true ceremonial-grade matcha is like a fine spring water, this is tapwater run through old copper pipes. It's not bad, it's still great for your health, but there's an "off" flavor that needs to be concealed with milk or sweetener. Quantity/Price This is where this tea makes up for its lackluster flavor. Although not a bargain by any means, DoMatcha 2nd Harvest compares favorably to other teas in this price range. Given that it's organic and from a reputable company, DoMatcha 2nd harvest is a decent value for what you get. Not great, but good. Packaging Your tea comes in a foil pouch inside a reasonable strong tin- The tin is so good I keep my old ones as odd-and-ends jars around the house. This is extreme protection for your tea, it's just a shame the tea inside isn't of a quality worth protecting this much. So this is a food-grade (read: not great for drinking on its own) matcha that's priced about average among its competitors. Although this isn't bad by any means, it's not a standout. This matcha would be great for lattes, matcha ice cream, or as an ingredient in any cooking or baking. For drinking it straight however, I definitely recommend the DoMatcha Ceremonial Grade.

Excellent Quality Organic Japanese Matcha
I started drinking matcha after a stay in Yokohama, and have tried several brands and preparations since then. There are many people who know much more about tea than I do, but I can tell you why I like the DoMatcha Second Harvest Matcha. This tea is a (reasonably) affordable matcha that is very high in antioxidants; since I started drinking it for the health benefits that was an important feature for me. The second reason I am a fan of this particular matcha is that it is not as grassy tasting as some; although it does have a slightly astringent aftertaste when made with fairly high concentrations of tea, it is smooth and has a wonderfully creamy consistency. Depending on your preparation technique the tea does tend to fall out of solution quicker than some other teas I have tried, but not annoyingly so. I appreciate the care with which it is packaged (there is a metallic inner bag that's vacuum sealed inside the tin) which ensures freshness to the consumer. Although far from cheap, I like the DoMatcha Second Harvest and keep coming back to it: the combination of taste, health benefits, and obvious care taken during production and packaging make it a good value for the price.

Quality matcha that will bring you back the ancient Japanese culture. I highly recommend.
Do not be fooled because it's 2nd harvest organic matcha. This is the real deal and probably taste as good as the regular organic (1st harvest?). I compare this 2nd harvest matcha to that of Teavana Imperial Grade Matcha, which I've enjoyed for awhile. It's that good and fresh. First time opening the container, I unscrewed the lid and then removed the pull-up sealed aluminum covering (like a tuna can or soup can). Inside is a metallic bag that contains and seals the matcha powder. You have the option to cut the bag and pour the matcha into the tin canister or leave it in the bag and use it as is. The lid to the canister has a thin sealant around the inner side that helps the container air-tight and seals it. This tea was very fresh when whisked and I don't see any clumps yet. The powder itself is extra fine and gracefully mixes well in a matcha bowl (chawan). The color is very vibrant and bright green. There's no dullness to it. The taste is very vegetal or 'grassy', which is what it's supposed to be. This is great Japanese tea at its finest and a 2.82 oz will last me awhile at the great price of $31. I highly recommend this product and will definitely buy again from DoMatcha.
