Does this work well with 3rd party after market batteries.

The charger works well with 3rd party after-market batteries. However, be careful of after-market batteries. Some are very fragile and will stop working after charging, swell up and therefore not fit in the camera or just not work in the first place. These effect are not a result of the charger but are the result of inferior batteries. For the price difference I would NEVER but the cheap after marks batteries. I love my camera too much.

Does this protect against voltage and current surges, overheating, overcharging, overdischarging, and short circuit? Other brands do.

Actually I don't know if it has that type of protection, but I never had a problem charging my batteries with it, that caused me any concern.

Where does the battery go into the b700?

The battery I ordered for my model, the Nikon P900 fits perfectly fine and is a good addition to the Nikon brand lithium battery. It holds a charge well when shooting for a day. Check the camera's owner manual to find out what replacement batteries will fit your model.
