how does it light up?

When light hits the strip, the micro-beads of glass under the colored translucent(or colorless/clear) layer redirect the light directly back toward the source(thus, it's reflective). So, the closer ones eyes are to the source of light, the brighter these will appear.(also depending on the brightness of the source. eg. vehicle headlights are one of the primary sources these are implemented to reflect). They do NOT light up on their own. They merely bounce the light that hits them back at the light's source in the same way a vehicle's license plate shows extra bright when hit with headlights or a flashlight.

Could I use these for my truck rims.

Each order has enough CURVED, self adhesive strips to make 4 complete circles for whatever rim size you select. So make sure you select your correct rim size(s). yes, these are curved strips for exact rim size fitment. so you must select for your correct rim size. if you use the wrong curve size, they will peel off after awhile. also note that the width is 8mm, so make sure you have the lip space on the lip of your rims for that 8mm width. otherwise we can custom a smaller width. there are pictures in this listing of cars.
