Q: will it melt gold with borax

No it will not get hot enough to melt gold or silver.

Q: can i use steel measuring cup or clay crucibles?

I don't see why not, clay and steel have much higher melting points than the furnace can provode.

Q: I would like to buy this furnace and a cast iron crucible in which I can melt lead. What is the inside diameter and depth of the furnace cavity?

I'm sorry for not knowing the dimensions. The furness is being advertised with a 10# capacity which has worked for me for casting 6 oz fishing sinkers en masse. Why are you considering a cast iron crucible if you are buying this furness?
