Watco Butcher Block Oil & Finish

I’ve been using this finish for years. It’s an easy wipe on finish that you can build up to the desired gloss. What I really like about it is that if it wears off in a spot, you can give the surface a good cleaning or light sanding and recoat and it looks new. One of my uses is on our kitchen island. Where people sit ends up worn from plates. Super easy to refresh.

Used this to refinish our butcher block and it worked great. Application was simple, the finish looked clean and rich, and it brought the wood back to life. I’ll definitely repurchase when it’s time for the next round of maintenance. Recommend if you want something that’s effective and low fuss sealer. No strong fumes (although it does have a smell), dries quickly and good coverage without scratching

Making cutting boards and using this to stain

Been using this butcher block sealer for years. It last for years also project after project. I recommend 4 coats and last coat to be thickest for a brilliant shiny finish. 1000 grit light sanding before every coat. Smell strong but not as bad as other products. Easy to apply with a cloth or old white socks. Resistant to water and anything spill on it. I used on island butcher block for 6 years still going strong. Just did a full kitchen on a house with butcher counter top with 4 coats. it looks amazing.

I researched a few butcher block finishing methods before settling on trying Watco Butcher Block Oil. I like how it emphasizes the grain without darkening the wood too much. This is a white birch butcher block that I purchased from Lowe's to turn into a desk. The interesting thing about this Watco product is there is certainly some sort of poly or varnish curing aspect, which one can tell from the smell after applying as well as when sanding with 400 grit between coats as instructed it appears to make some poly dust. I'm confident this will make a nice water-resistant coating. I did 3 coats of the Watco applied with an old cotton shirt, following all manufacturer directions for waiting time between coats and sanding/cleaning the wood. I love the final product, which brings out the grain in the wood while adding a nice golden glow and keeping it natural. The finish is not too glossy, more of a satin look. I have used my desk for about a month so far and it still looks beautiful. No visible wear or anything.

We have used this butcher block oil and finish since 2008. On non-work wood surfaces...sides of cabinets etc it provides a long lasting finish. On surfaces that get a lot of wear, we found it would routinely last a year or more and was easy to re-coat. If you seal the can after use properly, the product will have a long shelf life. We recommend it.

It colourless, dries fast and easy to apply. It dries quickly in the tin so better to change the container once you open it. Bought is twice already
