Can you use a standard size furnace filter? If so what size?

Shawn, the filter is 9 1/2 tall by 16 1/2 wide by 2 in thick....its a special air filtration filter. If you can find a furnace filter that size....you could use it, or buy the filter material and cut out your own....there is 2 cloth bag filters behind this filter. I have just been using a vacuum on my filter. Buy the Shop Fox , nice...does a decent joy....

Can i use this in my garage? It gets very hot during the summer? Will heat effect it at all?

You sure can! And no, heat will not effect it. There is a pretty stage filter that looks like your furnace filter and a sock filter inside. I would purchase extra furnace style filters. Should be available for same model on Amazon.

How loud is this thing? I would plan on using it in my garage would it require constant hearing protection?

Not loud at all. I have it on the ceiling in my basement workshop, and I do not wear hearing protection. Even on highest speed it is quiet.
