Extreme Deviance

There are textbooks that you sell back at the end of the quarter and there are those you keep. This is definitely one of those books that you'll want to keep. Bought this book for my Sociology of Deviance class and I'm actually glad I did. Overall, the book was a fairly easy read. It was written so that anyone could understand it and isn't filled with tons of Sociology jargon. The book is divided into sections based on various devious acts. These include everything from Alien abductions to tattoos. Each section has a series of articles that further explains the issue. One of the easier textbooks I have had to buy. I would recommend it. Shipping was quick, too. Book got here within 3 days. Not too bad.

The book itself is extremely interesting as it covers several different "lifestyles" that some call deviant and for others is just the normal day to day thing. Keep in mind that if you choose to buy this book used it is often used as a college textbook. It may have underlined/high-lighted passages and notes in it. If this is going to be a problem, I recommend buying a new copy. Overall, though, a very interesting read. Not only for those of us that can be put into one or more of these different "deviant" lifestyles, but for those that are just interested in why somebody may choose to live their life that way.

This book discusses deviance and provides many different examples of "extreme deviance", such as extreme tattooing, S&M practices, and adult-child sexual contact (just to name a few). I bought this book for my Sociology of Deviance class and it is a very interesting read! Not boring at all because there are first-hand accounts!

Bought this for class. Great price! Learned alot about things I kind of never wanted to know about and kind of made me sick to my stomach. Pedophiles, white power...it covers it all!

I would like to preface my comments by positioning myself in relation to this subject. I am heavily tattooed and have written extensively about this topic at university over the last few years in both Sociological and Cultural Studies arenas. I would have given this book five stars but for one thing; the chapters on tattooing and body modification are hopelessly out of date. Anything older than five years in this subject area is of questionable use because the meaning and demographics of tattooing are in constant flux. Since the essays in this book were published, tattooing went from slightly deviant to conditionally deviant dependent upon location and size. The information contained in this book is almost useless in regard to the current tattooing scene.If your interest is in deviance in general however, this is an excellent and well researched text. I would recommend it, especially if you are researching what I would call "lesser deviance".

The real life examples that are contained in this book keep it interesting and relevant. IT is full of all sorts of actions that can be deemed "extreme deviance." Much care is given to why such behaviors are considered deviant and how they cause trouble for society in general. Several levels of deviance are discussed such as unwanted sexual contact or extreme forms of body art such as piercings or tattoos. A very good read.
