What do you recommend to use as a finish if using these for coasters?

The best coating for coasters would be a 2-part resin. You'll get a glass like finish that is durable one it's fully cured. I would recommend practicing with resin if this is your first time using it. It is tricky and takes practice, but it's worth it.

These are not that heavy it all. Maybe 1/4 lb-1/2 lb.

What kind of wood is this?

I’m not sure what kind of wood it is but I will not purchase again. 75% of mine cracked not long after opening package. There are many reviews I see now that say the same thing. They are not drying wood properly.
