This is shrimp paste and is a Filipino staple. As a filipina myself, it was something I grew up eating with rice. I do believe there is a way to contact the seller and they can tell you to be rest assured as well.

Is this the same as the salted shrimp used in Korean kimchi?

I'm afraid it isn't. This is a fry, it's pink as you can see. I thought it can be used in kimchi, but no. What you looking for for is a fermented salted shrimp and it should be white
