How do the Sennheiser HD-555s compare to the Sennheiser HD-580s (a pair of which I owned years ago)? Where are the HD-555s made? China? Ireland?

My model of Sennheiser HD 555 is made in China!! I can say they are the best sounding in my colection,have them 6pairs,various!!!!My friend have HD 580,I can say the major diference is in the space,555 has more space,more sound than 580,more detail,better sounding with blues,jazz,rock,if U like that kind of music!!!! Difference is more occur if U R usin' headphone amp,than 555 is much more and better sounding!!!

does the "open-aire" indicate that sound escapes the headphones and would disturb others??  I need home-theater headphones to use while the kids sleep

The sound does leaks but I won't wake up the kids if you are in a different room.

is it good for travel

It's definitely not good for travel. I mean it depends how you look at it. I find it annoying that the wire is very long and the plug is huge. It makes is very inconvenient

Sennheiser HD 555 are stereo headphones,but they are higher level of the listening,because they have sistem of sound chaneling,it means a better position in space,more details,more sound!! Thats is not a surround,its better than surround!!!! Ive use them with blues,drum n base,jazz!!!!! They are excellent with that kind of music,sound of guitar is big,clean,U can hear is the artist playin with fingers or not!!!! USE HEADPHONE AMP!!!!! For my iPod I use FIIO E5,pleas try it!!!!!!!
