is it hard to assemble?

As the others have indicated, it's not hard to assemble, it's just that the set is in many pieces (58 or so) and the assembly is in 43 steps, so you're going to need at least 3-4 hours set aside. But each item is well numbered and easy to identify. The screws, nuts and bolts come in a package that is separated into letter codes so you can open up the parts you'll need to use when you are ready. The instructions are visual with very little wording (if any). It's best to have a very large work area to layout all the parts, this will make it easier to assemble. I assembled mine early Christmas morning at 12:30 AM and I was done at about 3:30-4:00 AM. :-)

Can the kitchen fit through a bedroom door once put together? Want to set it by Xmas tree but afraid that I will have to take it apart again to put i

its a corner, so you can get it through the door just by turning and sliding. I've actually moved it around the room a few times and taking up a flight of stairs.

appropriate for 4 year old?

yes it is great , we bought this at the time she was six but my 2 year old son has just as much fun playing chef with his sister, the kitchen is fun ,i think for all ages and does not have small pieces once put together
