Size:4-Pack Hydro-Sponge V filters provide both mechanical and biological filtration. Aerobic bacteria colonize the sponge providing a bacterial substance to facilitate the nitrogen cycle. In addition, the Hydro-Sponge traps larger waste particles mechanically cleaning the water. Other sponge filters can't compare to the amount of water the Hydro Sponge can move with the one inch diameter lift tube. The sponge is held on a heavy base to keep the unit stable and the raised sponge design prevents dead space beneath. Ideal for use in hatcheries and breeding facilities. Hydro-Sponge filters can be operated with either and air pump and stone, or a suitable powerhead. The Hydro V is rated for aquariums up to 125 gallons.

Glad I switched to this Sponge!
This 125g sponge works great in my 55g tank. Overfiltering is the best way to go! For reference, this sponge is about the size of a large roll of toilet paper. It takes a day or 2 to stay sunk to bottom of tank, after squeezing water into it & keeping a brick on it overnight. It works great to get sand particles out of the water from filling the tank. I have since switched to gravel, but it helped me tremendously with settling the sand & using as a buffer when adding water to the tank during fill-ups. The sponge tends to lose shape after a few squeezes in used tank water during deeper cleaning. I do this about once a month when it gets too dirty. It does retain most of its shape. Add an airstone within the sponge core, to cut down on the big/loud bubbles. So far I am happy with it! I have bought different sizes from the same company & all work well. I had used internal filters previously & kept getting detritus worms.. 🤢 None of that with this sponge! So glad I made the switch! Bonus = it makes an extra place for small fish to hide under. Plecos & snails love to nosh on it, too! 😋

is perfect for my fish
use with my fluval 406 in my 65 gallon tank. my water in my fish tank with 8 goldfish, is perfect for my fish. Yes I know I have more than what's recommended for goldfish for my tank, but until it becomes an issue..they are happy and growing with my 7-10 water changes. A month ago, I waited over 2 weeks to do a water change because I was on vacation. Despite some algae (which I also credit to adding a bunch of plants a week before my vacation, and some plants did not take) my water test were completely normal for ammonia nitrites and nitrates. I don't hide the filter, I think it looks fine in my fish tank.

Not the PRO version...
This is the old version of the Hydro-Sponge filter, not the PRO version, which comes with a vastly superior reticulated foam filter. Look elsewhere.

Great for Aquariums and Especially Axolotls
I have 2 of these on my 125 axolotl tank, they work very well. They do their job and they couldn't be easier to use. I like sponge filters because you're not having to tear apart a canister or a hob every few weeks. These sponges are so simple to clean that a 3 year old could do it, rinse them in a bucket of tank water then return them to the aquarium. Simple, quick, to the point. If you have axolotls, then get them a sponge filter.

Great
Great sponge filter! Highly recommended. Just be sure to take off the clear tube if you have fish that like to explore like plecos or corycats. Lost 2 cories with that tube on.

Missing parts
I think this item is a real hit or miss. I received my sponge filter and the “bull’s eye” part was missing (view picture for diagram). Without that part, I am not able to attach the clear, lift tube to the top of the sponge filter for the air to exit. I am not sure if it will have any effect on the function of the filter, but when I order items, I expect to receive items as presented. Besides the missing part, everything seems to be present, though I cannot attest to the actual filtration component. I will be returning this item and purchasing a different filter.

Nice filter but know the biggest size is BIG!
Nicely made and easily installed. I have a 60 gallon tank and decided to go with the sponge size V for 125 gallons. It is huge! About the size of a roll of toilet paper. When you're putting it in your tank, rinse it first as directed and then squeeze it out good. Once you assemble it and put it in the tank give it several good squeezes in the tank water. Get the air out and get the sponge nice and wet. Will discourage it from floating

Polishing filter only
This is a high density sponge filter with extremely small pours. It polishes the water in the aquarium very nice but will not help remove larger debris.
