An amazing GPS watch w/ customizable mapping
This watch is awesome! I bought a factory refurbished unit and it was brand new, everything included, except in a box marked "Refurbished by Garmin". The battery holds its charge as rated, everything works as expected, and has not even the slightest imperfection. Now onto the features, this watch is LOADED with features and options! The option to have sunrise/sunset + moon phase on the main time keeping screen is great! I love the hunting calendar and projected moon phase w/ moon rise times! BUT, the best feature of all is the mapping. I have loaded this watch with multiple maps and points of interest and even topo maps!! Topo maps are bit over the top and use lots of space, so I reuploaded a collection of custom very detailed maps for my state afterward and it has works out much better than I expected. It's really neat being in the middle of nowhere and have points of interest popping up on my watch like a tour guide! Cold GPS acquisition time is a little faster than my 910xt, but much quicker afterward once it gets a lock. Also, the screen is easy to read at a glace in the day and the back light is very nice, much nicer than the old 910xt.As for battery life this watch just runs and runs. In watch mode it seems to last forever, in GPS mode its about double the life of my old Garmin 910xt. The USB charger works as expected. One thing I was worried about is the watch freezing/crashing/resetting similar to a lot of the newer, more sophisticated GPS watches. I'm pleased to report the Fenix 1 is rock solid with a zero issue rate with me using it a lot over the last 5 months.

Really wanted to love this watch but hard too.
UPDATE ON WATCH #2:The second watch after a couple weeks of use seems to keep excellent time compared to the first watch! Functioned perfectly for the first week and connected very quickly to the GPS satellites. The watch now seems to freeze every time the alarm and I cannot snooze or shut the alarm off, it just freezes the watch while alarming. Also seems to freeze when I switch profiles and the only way to fix wither of these two problems is to push and hold the power/lighting button (top left) for about 15 seconds and this forces the watch to shut down. After a few minutes I can restart the watch and all seems to work until the next alarm or profile change, very disappointing.I really wanted this great looking and great fitting watch to work. This is now the third Garmin Fenix I have had and I have decided to go back to Suunto, thought I could save a few bucks on the Garmin but not worth my sanity or reliable watch. Oh wellThe Good:Watch looks great and fits really well, I love the size and shape it fits my wrist really well! Charging cable and clamp seem like quality and lock onto the watch nicely. Battery life seems to be pretty decent thus far and the screen while low resolution is very easy to read and you have options on how to set it up. I really love the time zone screen, able to add several different time zones. The alarm has audible and vibrate features and this is AWESOME, really awesome feature. The Bad:Being a watch (timepiece) I expect it to keep accurate time, FAIL Garmin! About every day or two this watch will gain about three to five hours! I had a hard time believing it to be honest, this is a very simple thing! I have used $10 watches that kept better time its insane that Garmin cant get this to keep proper time (without constant satellite connection). Of course there is no option to manually set the time, SO I have to connect to a satellite (several minutes outside) to get accurate time again. This is a real problem when it does this overnight as I miss my alarm for work.More Bad:Moving from different screens in the watch is really slow, it's got to load (and yes i have the most current firmware update). Outside of gaining five or so hours every couple days the watch also just switches time by several hours daily and if I hit any button and come back to my main time screen it's corrected itself (annoying).Still More Bad:New out of the box my return button wasn't working and if I jam it in REALLY HARD it sometimes works. This makes the task of setting the watch really time consuming and frustrating. Waiting for a replacement so I can return this one and hopefully the new one works as designed (tells accurate time at least!) As mentioned the satellites are a bit slow but that's not super critical for me, sadly I need them to keep this thing accurate in time. (fail Garmin).Overall I really love the looks and features of the watch, but am in disbelief that it doesn't have an option to set true manual time and cant maintain accurate time. I had thought of maybe the Fenix 3 but after reading all the bad reviews and hearing about more button issues I wouldn't pay the asking price.I have a Suunto Core that's been on my wrist for about eight years and still works PERFECTLY! I sent it in recently to get a new case for purely cosmetic reasons and thought this would be a good well priced watch to tide me over while my Sunnto was in the shop. I had nothing but great experience with Garmin products in the past but this is really a fail, after all the reviews and interacting with the Garmin customer service I would expect much more.I wont likely be buying anything else form Garmin in the future unless they really come through on watch number two and get some better quality control going. Suunto has never given me any issues at all, hard to beat that. Maybe the Suunto Traverse is my next watch?I will update this when watch number two arrives and see hoe that one works.

Great for hiking and outdoor activities
Solid GPS watch with tons of options. Purchased this baby to keep an eye on elevation during my workouts. I'm a dedicated runner, logging 3.400 miles per year, mostly with my Garmin Forerunner 235 which has almost all whistles and bells a runner could imagine: pace - heart rate - cadence - stride length -just to name a few but no true elevation so when I had the opportunity to buy this Fenix for a cool and low price I did not hesitate. So now I'm running with 2 GPS watches (sometimes) and could not be happier. There is however a big difference between both sports-watches. The Forerunner is more 'athlete' orientated while the Fenix stands out for hiking adventures, not so much for speed.
