How do I remove the old butterfly to replace it?

The butterfly is attached to the wire that’s attached to the plastic round circle at the end of the wire and that plastic circle piece plugs into the circular disc base . Get either a dull butter knife to gently lift out the small circular plastic piece and then install brand new butterfly replacement You can’t take just the butterfly off by itself you need to buy the butterfly replacement pack and install new butterfly wire stem piece each time butterfly becomes worn out and torn up by kitty .

Doesn't work unless upside down. Any suggestions on fixing it?

?? The whole thing upside down? Sorry, have never had any kind of problem with mine nor one I got for a friend. Can't even guess what might be wrong. Maybe recheck the batteries? Sorry, no help.

What type of batteries does this use? i've seen both aa and aaa mentioned in the reviews.

Does anyone’s cats like playing with it even if it is powered off? Do they enjoy just batting at the butterfly or does it need to be on to be enjoyed?

I asked my cat. She enjoys playing with it as it flutters and rotates through her space. However, she will play with it when she provides the energy which propels the butterfly. Not as much challenge but a chance to control flight. My cat loves to be in control. I do monitor her behavior to be sure she does not eat the butterfly
