THE BEST BOOK ON LABS WE'VE FOUND.
Gave my son this book for his birthday since he has a 9 month old chocolate lab, and he actually sat down to look it over...loved it so much that I believe he has not put it down since! Well-written, valuable, immediately usable information. I consider this book a must read for any lab owner - - wanna-be or soon-to-be lab owner. We have several books re: Labradors and what to expect month by month; this is the very best so far. Glad we have it.

Essential handbook for raising a Labrador puppy.
Like the previous reviewer, I'm a long time dog owner but I haven't had a puppy for ten years or more. Like that reviewer, I also purchased several books about the Labrador. While those books had a lot of interesting information about the history of the breed and so forth, most of the practical information was general and not overly helpful. On the other hand, this book has become my go to reference. It's provides excellent Lab specific information directly relevant to the age of your puppy as it develops over the first year. The specifics on training, care, and socialization are detailed, helpful, and ,most important, specific enough that they are both practical and directed at exactly what you need to know when you need to know it. If I had to buy only one book on raising a Labrador puppy, this would be it.

Helpful!
I've owned a Lab before, but he was grown and rescued from a shelter. He had a few "issues" I could blame on the previous owners... So when I got my 12-week-old puppy, I was really worried -- whatever might go wrong with him would be down to me! This book was just what I needed (I read it from cover to cover the day before he arrived). Yes, there are differences between theory and practice, and every dog is an individual -- but the book takes that into consideration and includes just about everything you might need to know. Fun trivia as well. Training tips are great -- better than puppy classes! I'm glad I got the eBook version, however, because there's no index, which makes the search function necessary.

States the obvious and bogus information.
The book is filled with the obvious. Nothing to directly look up if the dog is doing something wrong. I found they state the obvious. Spoke with my Vet about the book stating my Lab needs to switch off puppy food at 4 months....???? My Vet said absurd and WRONG information! He NEEDS puppy food for a year. Disappointed in the book overall.

Enjoyable read
I'm expecting a new lab puppy this fall and I wanted to brush up on what to expect for the first year of the dog's life. It's been awhile since I owned a dog and I was a child at the time. So with that said I never took training to the level of what I consider a well behaved dog. I have a short attention span and really have trouble reading a book from cover to cover. I am happy to say I finished the book and will use it as a reference when I get the puppy. There were nights I couldn't put it down to tell you the truth. I have the confidence now on what to expect and how to have a great relationship with my dog.

Best information for understanding the lab puppy
The book gives precise guidelines on what to expect from your puppy, and to understand what the puppy, and you, are going through, and provides consistent terminology the family can use to minimize conflict in commands to the puppy.Every owner should read this book, in addition to the books used to train the retriever for hunting. It helped to get the puppy ready for trimming her toenails, grooming her, and preparing her for the care to be given to her during her lifetime. It helps to understand the importance of the kennel, in housebreaking, and giving the puppy a safe haven.

Great book by very knowledgable lab person
I'm only through month 4 of a lab's life, but wow, what a useful book! As anyone who has had one found out, these are VERY happy, VERY strong, and highly energetic dogs that take several years to mature. Start training when they're young or you will be left behind. As I told my vet (repeatedly), "When do these dogs mature?? I am too old for this dog!" Once he did get trained (by someone else--I didn't have a clue how to get control of him at that point) and a few years old--well, all my friends as well as I totally fell in love with him! These can be awesome dogs. Be sure the breeder has handled him a lot, and make sure you can view genetic testing on his parents.

Very good book on lab puppies!
Very good book. I really like how it’s broken down month by month. I’m experienced with dogs and training, but haven’t had an 8 week old puppy in 20 years. This was a good refresher, not to mention guide and explanation of labs. We get our first lab in a few days and this book has helped us prepare, and plan. Highly recommended reading for lab pup parents!

Well written and informative
We bought this in preparation for our new Puppy arrival. Very informative with lots of relevant hints and tips for new dog owners. The month by month format makes it easy to digest in chunks but also makes it easier to go back and reflect on the development milestones as they occur.

Great informative book
Great book which covers many aspects of raising a puppy. The print size a little small for my old eyes! A robust book.
