High Noon (1952) (Masters of Cinema)

Justice done!
Fred Zinnemann's Oscar winning classic western, is not only one of the finest westerns ever made, but one of the greatest treasures of classic American cinema. Shot in "real time" the film stars the legendary Gary Cooper as lawman Will Kane, a marshal standing alone to defend a town of cowardly citizens against a gang of killers out for revenge. Well, I absolutely love this film and whilst happy with my old Olive Films release, EUREKA have proven their place as one of the best UK independent film distributors with the genuinely definitive release. This is an all new 4k re-master, which looks and sounds absolutely stunning, nice grain, rich blacks and frequently hard to believe you are watching something over 65 years old. Whilst visually, there's arguably not a huge difference between the Olive signature edition and MoC, I much preferred the more authentic uncompressed 2.0 PCM sound offered by this new release which has real surprising depth and wonderful clarity. However, if you're on the fence, where Eureka truly wins out is in the extras department with the following:- Audio Commentary by historian Glenn Frankel, author of "High Noon: The Hollywood Blacklist and the Making of an American Classic"- Audio Commentary by western authority Stephen Prince- 1969 Audio Interview with writer Carl Foreman from the National Film Theatre in London (76:46 of the film)- Interview with film historian Neil Sinyard (29:35)- "The Making of High Noon" 1992 documentary hosted by critic Leonard Maltin (22:11)- "Inside High Noon" 2008 documentary narrated by actor Frank Langella (50:11)- "Behind High Noon" 2007 featurette hosted by Gary Cooper's daughter Maria Cooper-Janis (9:48)- Theatrical Trailer (2:17)- Hardbound slipcase with a limited edition 100-page collector's book featuring legacy and brand new essays, an artwork gallery, viewing notes and production credits- Reversible sleeve art with alternative black and white coverThe disc is REGION B Locked (verified) with English HoH subtitles (which i'm glad to say aren't that horrible garish yellow like the Olive release!) and is unquestionably the finest release of High Noon and once again Eureka's Masters of Cinema line proves them to be every bit the equal to Criterion. Genuinely one of the most diverse, dedicated, and exciting labels around at the moment, and I really hope they pick up some more classic titles like this in the future.

Wonderful blu-ray package of a classic film
High Noon is one of the great classics of the Western genre, with a great script by Carl Foreman, masterful direction by Fred Zinneman and a brilliant late career performance by Gary Cooper. And the Limited Edition (LE) blu-ray from Eureka is a wonderful package to showcase the film.Based on a recent restoration, the image quality is marvellous, featuring strong contrast and fine detail. Sound is clear. There are a boatload of special features on the disc, including multiple commentary tracks and several featurettes that cover the making and lasting influence of this memorable movie. The LE has the blu-ray in a plastic case housed in a hard slipcase with a thick 100 page booklet containing written material and archival stills. My only niggle is that the items are tightly packed in the slipcase and a little hard to get out.For fans of High Noon this is a must-have.

Tin Star
Classic 50's Western starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. An astounding 4k transfer from Eureka presented in a gorgeous box with booklet containing 'Tin Star', the original story the film is based on and interesting essays about the films release and the negativity surrounding it. A Masters of Cinema classic that you need to have.

12 midday and all's well?
I was 10yrs old when this film was released, but I am not sure when I actually saw it for the first time. It is a good old western of that era when gunmen were shot or killed with no sign of blood. The story is like most westerns is with good over evil, and the film can be a little slow at times, but if you are of that era then I think you will enjoy it.

Spitzen Edition
Spitzen Edition, die alles übertrifft (deutsches Booklet zum Beispiel), das ich bisher gesehenhabe ... und immer noch ein Hammer-Schwarzweiß-Western eben wegen Gary Cooper.
