GA, the peoples' superhero vs. the people
Benjamin Percy really goes for the throat on this one!Story: Going with the classic "hero is framed for murder, now everyone hates him" trope is perhaps a little overplayed, but Percy does fine here. Percy really gets it on the nose with some dialogue where various citizens around Seattle are being interviewed about their opinions on GA. I guess Percy is quite aware of what's going on at Marvel, and how fans have responded because he writes two cosplayers (dressed as GA and Batman), possibly as in story stand ins for all of us fans who make comments about SJWs, and the Batman cosplayer says he "loathes" SJWs. lol I don't know what Percy's personal political alignment is. Either he's making fun of SJWs, like the staff at Marvel who ran the company into the ground, or he's one of them and he's mocking the fans for just claiming everyone at Marvel is an SJW. Either way, it's a brief scene on one page, and Percy really doesn't delve into that for the rest of the book. I mostly just shrug it off. Oh yeah, and Dinah jokingly thanks Ollie for "mansplaining" something to her. Whatever. They still love each other. There's a LOT going on in this book from a mayoral candidate that one other reviewer pointed out comes across as Donald Trump-lite, a rogue police officer leading the Vice Squad trying to eliminate the "filth" of the city, and a dark archer who's determined to change public opinion on GA for good. It was cool to see a return of the Ninth Circle from volume 1! There's a good, developing relationship between Ollie and Chief Westberg throughout the book. Ollie, though being hunted by the police, will even put himself in harm's way to protect a good cop. That's a hero. We get a great manhunt scene at a sports coliseum, a duel between master archers, the machinations of Ollie's corrupt and evil CFO, Broderick, a showdown with a heavily armed rogue cop, and a forest confrontation with a twist ending that I certainly didn't see coming! And that's just the action bits. Percy really has a lot going on here, but it's easy to follow, fun as hell, and intriguing with good setup for future stories. As before I'm looking forward to the next volume.Art: When I got this book in, I realized that Otto Schmidt does most of the issues here and I couldn't be happier. He is without a doubt the best artist working on this title. The other artists here round out the book with complementary styles to Schmidt's. But, Schmidt is the real superstar here. I can see him becoming one of my favorite artists in the years to come. While I don't want Schmidt to be taken off of Green Arrow, I am intrigued to see what other titles would look like if he drew them. The colorists do a great job here. Yeah, there's a LOT of green, but this title has consistently looked good from a color perspective since the beginning of Rebirth.Overall: Initially starting with some on the nose references to SJWs, the story makes for a good "hero turned against the people" tale, while also giving us the return of Ollie's arch nemesis. I would have liked to have seen a return of Roy to the fold. I'm not so sure I'm all for Ollie's half sister Emiko being a "better" archer than Ollie. Ollie is supposed to be the DC Universe's best archer. Period. But, he handles his own problems while also showing the power of friendship and loved ones. Fantastic, world class art, and tone appropriate, vivid coloring render a beautiful book. I think Percy is doing a fine job here. Looking forward to volume 4!
