Japanese-style crochet is getting ready to sweep the globe! Japanese Wonder Crochet is the first major Japanese crochet book to be translated into English. It introduces crafters outside Japan to the wonderful crochet techniques and charts that are so popular within the country. The book shows a creative approach to classic crochet stitches such as Aran, herringbone, Bavarian, waffle, crocodile, reversible crochet, and many more. A swatch pattern is provided for each stitch which helps crocheters practice the mechanics of the stitch before applying them to larger projects. 25 exciting projects are included: A patchwork throw A reversible cowl Bags in Bavarian, crocodile, Aran stitches and more Totes in herringbone and rib stitches A vintage bag and floral brooch in bullion stitch A tea cozy, mittens, a shawl And so much more! An extensive introduction by Japanese knitting and crochet expert Gayle Roehm explains the stitch charts as well as the differences and similarities between Japanese and Western styles of crochet. A guide to stitch symbols and extensive lessons provide visual guidance. With Japanese Wonder Crochet and a little practice, crocheters and Japanese-style knitters can open up many new horizons using the wonderful patterns that so many Westerners have already fallen in love with. Review: Simple, lovely designs, *charted only* - These are not elaborate crochet designs but beautifully detailed. They are charted without written instructions. That's pretty typical of a lot of Japanese crochet designs. There is a detailed description for each charting symbol in the back. Great photography and quite a few things I'd like to make. Review: Nice designs - I love this book-it has such nice designs, and it includes charts which I prefer.

Not for a beginner, or if you dislike charts
I bought this through another company & couldn't browse the book before buying. I thought it would be nice to see Japanese style patterns & projects. I do like a several of the projects in the book. Many of the step-by-step photos are good in the "point lessons" for the different stitches featured. However, a person new to crochet would likely get frustrated with the lack of instructions: the patterns are charted with minimal other instructions. The patterns aren't totally written out like many are used to (including myself). I'm interested in trying them out though, to see how I do. One thing I'm not fond of is that they don't have a symbol key for the charts in the book-I'll be referring to another resource if I forget a symbol.

Pure pleasure
This is a great book for people who are willing to go the extra mile in self learning to create beautiful textures. It will help to know how to read a crochet pattern before hand. Suits the adventures type who is happy to be challenged.

Designs are beautiful, but patterns are incomprehensible
Even though I've been crocheting for many years, crochet charts are new to me. When I try to find details on how to do the crocheted puff entrelac stitch, for example, there's only a chart. That would be okay if somewhere in the book there was an explanation of the chart symbols; there isn't one. I can find some of the symbols online, but not all of them, so this book is pretty much useless. I expect better from Nixon Vogue and Tuttle.

Disappointed
It is an interesting book with some nice ideas but in terms of stitches you won't learn much. For a complete beginner I think would be difficult to follow. But what I found very frustrating is the small size of pattern diagrams and lack of indications about how many chains you in need to prepare...so you found yourself counting this mini circles and everything looks crowded and hard to follow. All symbols are in the back of the book , it is a forever back and forth if you are not familiar with them.

A different style of crochet and you'll love it!
Crochet can have connections to specific cultures or folk arts. I love seeing the stitches and how to make them plus the various creations with simple directions how to make them.
