this unit is well built and fulfills it's purpose perfectly. it is easy to read and has idiot-proof markings of proper cold and frozen food storage temperatures. having worked in food service within the military, i can't overstate how important a thermometer is in your cold storage areas. how else do you know you're food is being stored correctly? you don't...unless you have thermometers. i found that the temp in my refrigerator was not where it should be...it was too warm by almost 10 degrees! after turning the setting up a notch, everything was A-OK. without a thermometer, i would never have known and would have had to rely on the recommended manufacturer settings for the refrigerator (which is a bad idea). even if your fridge has a built-in digital thermometer, you should still have a thermometer that lives in there, as all electronic devices eventually fail or give false readings. these alcohol based units are also far more accurate and reliable than the dial-type ones, which invariably fail within a short amount of time. this one is built to be pretty tough, as thermometers get dropped all the time in the industry, and perhaps even at home, depending upon where and how you decide to mount it. this is a quality NSF approved thermometer and well worth the money.

For what it does, this product is almost perfect. As the product description and other reviews have noted, it is an easy-to-read, oil-(not mercury)filled refrigerator/freezer thermometer. In addition to having large numbers, the refrigerator and freezer "zones" are clearly identified, and the temperature scales are provided in Fahrenheit and Celsius. It would be perfect if it had a better method of attachment. However, while the metal "clips" are not ideal for my refrigerator/freezer, I can't really suggest a "universal" improvement that would work for everybody. So I'll just give it 5 stars for functionality, quality of construction, and value - and leave it at that. BUY IT. From my research, it appears to be the best product of its kind on the market.

After my refrigerator/freezer failed, I decided I needed to monitor the temperatures in both compartments of the new one. I bought two of these units. I prefer this old fashion type to the digital due to their basic reliability. Both units indicate the same temperature, which indicates good calibration. They also agree with a different type of thermometer, which means there is a good chance they are also accurate. My only issue is the mounting system. I was able to affix one to a shelf in the freezer, but I have had to simply lay the other on a shelf in the refrigerator. In any case, I would not hesitate to buy another if needed.

Like others, I bought these devices to monitor interior fridge and freezer temps, and to ensure that the digital display temperatures on the fridge were accurate. In my case, the display is on the frame, inside the fridge---door must be open to see the display and adjust the controls. My displays proved to be accurate, requiring little to no tweaking of controls (which are digital buttons, not dials). For fridges with dial controls, these devices are a must. I knew in advance that the clips would be of little use in attaching the device. The fridge section has glass shelves and plastic bins. There is no surface narrow enough to deploy the clips. I simply stow the thermometer in a door bin and view as needed. While the freezer has wire bins and shelves, using the clips would only put the thermometer in the way of food, and decrease storage space. So I simply stow it in a door bin and view as needed by pulling it out and glancing at it quickly. Where I found it most useful to have a thermometer is in the "meat keeper" bin in the fridge. This is a low temp storage bin that has a connection to the freezer via a vent. A mechanical control slides to open or close (or partly open) the vent to regulate the temperature, by regulating air flow from the freezer. The ideal temperature is 32-33 F, at which meat will keep for a week or more. You can also do a "soft freeze" at 30-31F which makes it last even longer. The sliding control is very temperamental and usually I'd make it too cold (solid freeze) because I didn't have an accurate thermometer. Now I can use the thermometer to help me regulate the drawer temperature to a steady 32-33F.

Since the big question about this thermometer is how to mount it, and the manufacturer gives absolutely NO help AT ALL, I took some photos of how I did it in my freezer. Amazon is not accepting customer images for this product (later I discovered that they just moved them down with the reviews), so I made this short (two-image) slideshow. The thermometer clips onto the front of a shelf where it is very easy to read just by opening the door, regardless of how much food is in the freezer, and it takes up no space that could be occupied by food. I had to lift the mounting clips slightly from the bottom of the back of the thermometer to get them over the top edge of the shelf rail, but after that I just slid it down until it stopped. It turned out to be the ideal position for me to read it. I suspect a similar mounting could be done in any freezer with wire shelves. Sorry I can't help those with glass shelves. The second image also shows how accurate this thermometer is. The digital thermometer responds so quickly that it had risen a few degrees just in the few seconds it took me to take the photo, but immediately after I opened the door it read -10.0°F, exactly the same as the CDN FG80 thermometer.

This is the one! I had an earlier tube-style thermometer but it only had hooks, not clips. That fell out of the refrigerator a couple of times and finally died. I got a dial-styled one. That wasn't bad, but it hung so low below the shelf that things were constantly brushing against it and eventually the glass front popped out. Dead. This thermometer is accurate to within one degree F, as confirmed by a Thermapen. It has tight clips on the back. These are a little tough to work with; they won't just slip on, you have to pull the clips back and slip them over the metal on your refrigerator racks. The result, though, is a securely attached thermometer that stays out of the way of food being put in and taken out. That plus the high accuracy makes me confident that this will finally be my last refrigerator thermometer.

It's a shame I can't return these. Beware of fine print! I became too comfortable with Amazon's return policies. They are difficult to hang on a shelf. I received 1 of the 4 with a different clip. None fit my freezer shelves or fridge. Very disappointing.

OVERALL DECENT DEAL FOR THE PRICE. HOWEVER, SMALL AND EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO READ. Measures: 5"H x 1.25"W x 1/2"Thick I've been burnt numerous times with cheap tacky defective junk arriving whenever I pay less than $5 for an item or purchase an add-on. NOT WITH THIS ITEM - this little temp gauge arrived with double protective packaging. As soon as I placed it in my hand I could immediately see & feel this thing was well made and by far exceeded all expectations regarding superior quality for such a low price of $4.00. I TESTED AGAINST TWO OTHER THERMOMETERS IN BOTH MY FRIG and FREEZER - IT WORKS PERFECT. I'll use this for backup & calibration only - TO MUCH OF A STRAIN TO READ . MY MAJOR COMPLAINT/ANNOYANCE it's kind of small, gets foggy and extremely difficult to read - so you need to rub off the condensation and read it as quick as possible. Also, I don't use the clips or any other attaching mechanism because it's so small the only way I can read it is to pull it out fast and get a close look - so I just leave it loose. I PREFER MY LARGE DIAL THERMOMETER - MUCH EASIER TO READ AND SITS UPRIGHT.

Sirve para su propósito. Tiene un tamaño adecuado para colocarlo en varias partes de refrigerador. Mide bien la temperatura. Lo único ea que se empaña con el frío, para ver la temperatura hay que pasarle un trapo para desempañarlo, pero nada grave. Lo recomiendo.

I use this for the garage freezer. Nice small size. Very accurate, -18C, exactly the same compared to another thermometer.
