Back on Track
As someone who reads over 300 romance novels per year, I can say that Rice's Midnight Man, Woman on the Run, Port of Paradise, The Italian, and A Fine Specimen are among my favorite books in this genre; ones that I reread every year or two. Humor, passion, steam, riveting plots, and good writing are the equivalent of a literary unicorn in romance. The Midnight, Protectors, and Dangerous trilogies are definitely above average as well. After a number of recent disappointing reads with the Billionaire books and Men of Midnight series (not the trilogy) which seemed to blend together, I wondered if Ms. Rice had lost her mojo. I still have her on auto-buy so Midnight Renegade popped up on my ereader and I dove in without reading any description. The fact that this book started with a heroine with amnesia was a red flag. Amnesia, foundling babies, and fake relationships are all on my no-fly list. Given that this was a memory loss caused by drugs given during a kidnapping it worked better than usual. I just find with this trope that you get jerked out of the story each time the person can remember one thing, but not another. How the hero meets the heroine is slightly more fishy.Matt, introduced in the previous novel, is an interesting alpha hero, damaged, brooding, but totally gobsmacked by Honor. I liked how strong Honor was during the story, but could see her being a potential pain in the butt in future books. The steam factor is high as Rice is great at writing sex scenes. The plot is reminiscent of Crossfire, which was surprising, but still enjoyable. So, why not five stars? There are a couple of plots holes that drove me crazy. No spoilers. How the source knew about the coordinates for the Grange location remained a mystery. Also, if you were a group of villains at a secret location and a vehicle showed up unexpectedly, wouldn't you send out a few people to see who had arrived? The other issue was Honor's long-winded rant during the climax. It just didn't ring true. If, like me, you miss Rice's older books, definitely give this a read. Don't forget to track down her books mentioned above that are not part of a series. The two based in Italy are just as strong and less formulaic in terms of the leading men. If you have never read anything by Lisa Marie Rice, start with the ones mentioned. You are in for a lot of great reading.

Great story
Honor is an emergency room doctor and wakes up being dragged from a river. She doesn’t remember how she got there or where she’s been. Matt was a navy SEAL who was discharged after saving some children from a crazed madman. Now he’s staying in a mountain cabin waiting to start working for a very successful security company. He’s fishing when he hooks an arm. He jumps in and pulls her to safety. After calling his buddy they check her out and notice she was shackled and drugged and has Matt’s name written on her arm. As she slowly gets her memory back, they realize that her father is missing and the men who kidnapped her think she’s dead. Can they stop them from unleashing something horrible on California?Action and suspense. A story that will hook you from the first page.

Me
J: I thought this was going to be really good but it really was just not. The plot was interesting and it started with so much action and suspense. But then it got stuck in way too much relationship drama. I wasted so much time trying to get back to the exciting plot. But then it just started getting kinda ridiculous and she lost me.

Plot holes
This was a looong story and it had so many plot holes. I didn’t end up finishing it. I always expect to suspend some disbelief but there were too many details that were just too convenient and implausible. For example, Honor has Matt’s name written in sharpie on her arm. She escaped from being tortured and drugged! How on earth was she coherent enough to know she should write his name down and where could she possibly find a sharpie in her prison to write with? It had to be a sharpie because he pulls her out of the water and anything else would have washed off. So she was drugged enough to have amnesia but not enough to overlook writing Matt’s name - in sharpie! - or lose her knowledge of latitude and longitude, or her ability to drive? Convenient plot devices.

Should have been a novella
Lisa Marie Rice cannot write a bad sentence but she can write too many sentences. This book would have made a taut thriller if she hadn't padded it with constant repetition. How many times do we need to be told Honor is afraid for her father? How many times do we need to have the plot rehashed? Honor tells John Huntington what happened to her and what she suspects is going to happen. Then Huntington calls billionaire Jacob Black for help and Honor tells the entire story again. As a result the story sags and drags. I couldn't help feeling that Rice had a word count she had to meet. Too bad....

Good one, I Liked it
Another top notch story in the Midnight series. It's not necessary to read the others to really enjoy this book, although if you have that will add to the experience in fun, subtle ways. Action, romance, humor, intelligent with some sexy scenes .Pros: Good storyline, an intelligent female main character who can take care of herself, believeable.Cons: In I the first third of the book there's a lot of repetition , i.e. He saved her life from a frozen river, after describing the entire experience . Kept repeating portions, more than simply remembering/nightmares/thinking about it/relating it to someone.

Do You Believe in Magic?
I believe in all the magic this author creates for her characters. Many authors risk having their series become boring and predictable. Lisa Marie Rice has no such issues...the men may all be alpha males but each brings a uniqueness to his story. Ms Rice creates females, not as victims or damsels in distress, but as women who challenge and complete the Men of Midnight. Matt and Honor continue this tradition with their unique assets and personalities-no cookie cutters here! I hope this series continues for a long time....well done Lisa Marie Rice...I can't wait for Luke's story!

Good characters. Good plot
Enjoyable, with a complex and unusual plot. The heroine was smart and reacted credibly, and there was a sympathetic treatment of PTSD from both civilian and military points of view that gave depth to the characters.Slight negatives for me were the odd cliches - the women were all gorgeous, the men all massive and rugged; there was conveniently to hand a super-hacker who could provide amazing amounts of information at the drop of a mouse; and the security company had access to kit that was even more advanced than the serving SEALs had. But these are minor quibbles. It’s well worth reading.

In this book there was far too much reviewing of previous plots in the series
This is my first book by this author, and I found it frustrating. There was so much backstory given about every secondary character who was mentioned. It was obvious that I'd missed all their stories but I found it annoying that this was emphasised with every single appearance. And if I had read the previous books in the series I wouldn't need this over-the-top reminder. The story itself started well, but there was a lot of repetition and I skipped over quite a bit. It wasn't as engaging as I'd hoped and took me almost a week to finish it (instead of my usual day). The plot seemed rather implausibe as well as being a bit shallow. Only a couple of typos, but calling The Grange "The Grunge" in one place was pretty bad. Will not be buying any more by this author.
