Its a chess board I want to hang, but its width is exactly 1/2" and the bracket 1/2" would there be enough room without scratching?

I think so. We used the bracket to hang a 1/2 inch wall mirror and was able to rest the bottom of the mirror on the bracket without scratching. Hope that helps.
