How short is this item upon arrival in its box; that is, how long is it when first opening the package it comes in? i need a shorter version.

In the fully collapsed condition, it is 8". Fully extended, it is 18".

How long is this extension????

10 to 12 long, but, it is not standard size either. It is too small in circumference to match up with standard gutters.
