I bought the Ranger 185Vs last fall had it completely serviced at Hiawassee Marine. It started running rough and sputtering on about my 7/6th time out.. So I call a mobile Yamaha certified Mechanic that had to readjust the throttle linkage and said it only had 2 threads holdout on. And that I needed a new water/ fuel separator. The one I took off was made in 2020 and had some rust on the top where it’s threaded. No way the so called mechanic changed it. $700 for a top to bottom service and you don’t change the freaking water/fuel separator.🙄 It will get changed regularly now. Just fill it full of gas before installing it. Yes it’s makes a mess.

More important than my review- rub a little oil around the seal of the filter the same as you would a vehicle oil filter before installing and you will be able to remove the filter later on to replace it with no problems. If you do not rub a little oil on it, you may have to take it all off your boat and use a vise to break the filter loose. Over the years I have fought trash in my carburetor and drained the carburetor more often than I can count to remove water. Since I installed my first fuel water separator about 5 years ago, I’ve not had to work on my outboard or take it to the shop because I had trash clogging my needle or anything to do with my carburetor. I’ve also not had to drain my carb to remove water that was either in the fuel from the gas station or caused by condensation from living in the Deep South. I purchased the original Atwood kit for initial installation and just replace filter as recommended by manufacture or after approximately 75 gallons. I use this same model on 4 different outboards all which are 2-strokes. It works great on the 3 that have mixed fuel and on my oil injected 40hp without mixed gas. I recommend this to everyone who mentions their boat isn’t running top notch or spitting and sputtering. This small investment will save you hundreds on shop repairs and possibly save your weekend of fun on the water.
