Exit Humanity (Bloody Disgusting Selects)

An interesting and beautifully shot zombie film.
A unique entry in the zombie genre, Exit Humanity takes place at the close of the Civil War. In fact it begins in the midst of a civil War skirmish, where the first zombies enter the scene. And they are zombies; these are the living dead, slow and lumbering and hungry as ever for human flesh. The action centers on Edward Young, a Confederate soldier who is one of the first to encounter a zombie. Not long after he has to put down his wife and forced to set off to find his young son who has run away. They are seen mostly in sunny flashbacks.the film, written and directed by John Geddes, is remarkably artful and inventive given its reported #300,000 budget. The woods of Canada stand in for the woods of Tennessee, but I think we all know by now that a small budget film will take place in the wilds and also that it will have a small cast. Though the cast is small, they are effective, though the head bad guy tends to overact the way head bad guys do in these kinds of films. For a very long time after the opening one only sees Edward Young and I admit I was wondering if this was going to be a one-person film. But be assured he eventually meets up with others and the film takes off in another direction than one man roaming the wilderness. In fact the film develops into the kind of post apocalyptic drama where it's other people who are a bigger problem than the zombies. The zombies, when they appear sporadically throughout the film, are made up to look really horrible and are very effective. They usually attack solo or in small numbers, so don't expect too much zombie-action or anything on a grand scale. There is a moderate-sized horde at one point in the film. Be aware that the story is often told with narration (by Brian Cox), and taht the narration is told with a gimmick. Edward keeps a journal through all these times and also illustrates what has been happening, as he has an artistic talent. At times the action switches from the world at large to his journal where the pictures become animated and the animation moves the story forward. It is obviously a way to create scenes that would be too expensive to film live. Because the movie is good, I accept this, and they are artfully done. It helps that they look like someone's drawings and not some attempt to fool the audience with computer animation. They are all very short. There's even an attempt to explain the origins of the zombies via supernatural scrolls in the best of the animated sequences. The film looks terrific. I was really taken with the beautiful camerawork in this film, something you can almost never say about any zombie film. In fact, the look is its strongest point. where it's weak is in its pacing. At almost two hours long, it's slow, sometimes very slow. It spent too much time showing Edward's grief over losing his family and in fact, too much time in most of the subsequent developments. Only rarely was there any tension, and everyone seems to have all the time in the world. For Example (Minor Spoiler Here): when the good people manage to escape the bad ones it takes forever for them to meet up again even though they seem to be only a short hike from each other's camps.Zombie action fans are not going to like this film, but people who like exploring the human relationships during an apocalypse will find some interest here as will those just looking for something different in the zombie genre.

A Bit Surreal, and Different
Prior to watching this movie, we read the reviews, which were decidedly mixed. We understand why the reviews were mixed, and we can see both points of view. Even so, we liked this different take on zombie movies. Warning, this movie is decidedly slow, even when it is fast. The movie is based on the deep introspection of one of the lead characters, and because of that deep introspection, the movie does plod in places. For people who are deeply introspective, this movie could be rewarding. Fans of action movies should move onward to another movie.Edward Young's family has presumably fallen victim to the zombie outbreak that apparently occurred around the time of the Civil War. Edward is struggling to make sense of what has befallen his family, and apparently the rest of the world as he knows it. Eventually, food runs low and Edward goes out to find more. He encounters another survivor, Isaac, whose sister was kidnapped by general Williams and his men. Events get worse from there.Of course, zombies keep picking people off one by one as the general spars with Edward and Isaac, which makes you wonder why the general keeps trying to be the master of what seems to be a dying world. Then there is Emma, Isaac's sister, and probably one of the best characters in this movie, Eve. While Emma is attractive (and also smart), Eve is the medicine woman who has managed to do well in this post-apocalyptic world. Indeed, Eve was my favorite character because she is definitely intelligent. The only place she failed is not being ready to deal with a non-zombie human, the general. So, this movie plods along with occasional visits by zombies, except for that one time where Edward deliberately calls the zombies, amassing quite a collection of zombies. Oh, we neglected to mention that introspective Edward writes in his journal, a lot, and there are periodic cool animations.Quite a bit more happens in this movie than we described. But, what fun would it be if we gave away everything. One cool thing is that it turns out that someone is immune to the zombie virus, and everyone wants that person. It is unclear if the characters have the technology to capitalize on the immunity of that one person, but at least the immunity exists. We are introspective people, and we enjoyed being inside another person's head, even if that person was really conflicted. Indeed, the internal conflict is part of what we found to be enjoyable. However, fans of movies that have hordes of zombies being chewed up by bullets are not going to be amused. This movie is not an action movie so much as one man trying to figure out what his life, and the lives of other non-zombie humans, means in this world. Seems like the kind of things we would be wondering ourselves. After all, the zombies should eventually starve to death, and we have to eat until then.Enjoy!

A beautiful film
I went into this expecting the worst and ended up being pleasantly surprised at what a wonderful film this turned out to be. I loved the musical score, the story, and the fact that the focus was not so much on the zombies but on one mans pain after losing everything he loved and his struggle to find hope on his way back from the brink of insanity.I also enjoyed the many moments in the film when the narrator got philosopical about nature, humanity and life. It was low budget but even so the acting was great and the creature effects were pretty good. This was definitely worth my time and I would recommend you check it out for yourself and not be persuaded by the nay sayers. Just give it a watch and judge for yourself.

More Suspense and Introspective Drama than Zombie Horror Action
Overall a very good movie, but you aren't going to get "Resident Evil" zombie action. Clearly not a very high budget, but they did well working with what they had. Filmography and sound are all good; something always suspect for any indie style production. The acting is, for the most part, very good. Would have had 5 stars, but the zombie makeup wasn't fully convincing and the plot tends to drag in places.Told from the view point of one man, via his journal, during a zombie epidemic. Reminds me of the old fashioned zombie movies. Less blood and gore. More introspection and focused on the people. Though in the mode of what I consider the best zombie movies, the zombies are present but it's the people you really have to watch out for.

Bruce Willis's
character was dead the whole time. There, I just saved you 2 hours. This movie is also 2 hours but there's nothing to sum up.

Unusual Zombie flick
This Zombie movie is set during & just after the American Civil War.It, in my humble opinion, is a bit slow & the background music can get annoying at times but overall, I would say that I enjoyed the movie & probably would watch it again as the Zombies are really good.
