YES it does do not listen to that guy. they are not mutually exclusive james. many board do both. this does sli 2,3,4 way. however crossfire is only 2 way i believe. nice thing about this board is the PLX CHIP it has will allow 16x/16x with to card (debatable if needed today but nice to have for next year and onward with HBM that may change. YES AMD GPU'S WORK AND 2 WAY CROSSFIRE X-FIRE. evga does not publish this but just got this board and had to DIG to find out, common evga that is just LOW DOWN AND DIRTY for you motherboard customers SHAME,SHAME

how is the wifi connectivity on this motherboard?

all motherboards with a z97 or h97 chipset will have ddr3 ram slots. If you want ddr4 look at an x99 motherboard(note it has different compatibility for cpus)This particular board has 2 slots.Note all this information only applies to intel chipsets.

question about the stinger model. does the i/o protector cause the gigabyte g1 gaming gtx970 not to fit owing to its backplate?

I can't speak for the Gigabyte G1 GTX970, but the backplate does not interfere with the MSI GTX980 I have installed. I doubt it will cause you any trouble.
