Effective Protection in a Convenient Lotion
If you're looking for a reliable insect repellent that doesn't compromise on comfort, the Sawyer Products SP564 Premium Insect Repellent Lotion with 20% Picaridin is a standout choice. Exceptional Protection Against Biting Insects This lotion contains 20% Picaridin, which has proven to be as effective as DEET in repelling a wide range of pests. In my personal experience, it provided up to 14 hours of protection against mosquitoes and ticks, and up to 8 hours against flies, gnats, and chiggers. Whether you're hiking in the woods or enjoying a backyard barbecue, this lotion keeps biting insects at bay. Non-Greasy and Odorless Formula One of the biggest advantages is its non-greasy texture. The lotion absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving a sticky residue, making it comfortable to wear all day. It's also virtually odorless, so you won't be left with that strong chemical smell common with other repellents. Skin-Friendly and Suitable for the Whole Family The formula is gentle on the skin, which is great for those with sensitivities. I've used it on both adults and children without any irritation. Plus, it's safe to apply on clothing and gear without causing damage or stains. Convenient Size and Easy Application The 4-ounce tube is perfect for travel and fits easily into backpacks or pockets. The lotion format allows for precise application, ensuring you cover all exposed areas thoroughly. This makes it more efficient than aerosol sprays that can miss spots or get carried away by the wind. Why Choose Picaridin Over DEET? Picaridin is a newer repellent that offers similar efficacy to DEET but with several benefits: No Damage to Gear: Unlike DEET, Picaridin doesn't harm plastics or synthetic materials. Pleasant to Use: It's less oily and has no strong odor. Safe and Effective: Provides long-lasting protection without compromising safety. Pros: Long-lasting insect protection Non-greasy, fast-absorbing lotion Odorless and gentle on skin Safe for use on clothing and gear Compact and travel-friendly size Cons: Requires reapplication after swimming or heavy sweating Final Verdict The Sawyer Products SP564 Premium Insect Repellent Lotion is a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts and anyone looking to protect themselves from biting insects comfortably and effectively. Its superior formulation and ease of use make it a top choice among insect repellents on the market. Highly recommended for peace of mind during outdoor activities.

Goodbye Noseeum Nightmares
No lie, this stuff works! I am a magnet for noseeums and I get eaten alive every year when visiting Southwest Florida for the winter holidays. So much so, that I wound up at Urgent Care from the sheer volume of bites last year. I read about this product and decided to give it a try and let me say, it performed amazingly. Not a single bite to my arms or legs. This lotion was amazing and I also purchased the accompanying spray version for added protection. If noseeums ruin your vacation, this is your answer. Great product and reasonably priced as well. Plus, it’s very low scent and not overly greasy or sticky like other products.

Tired of buying 100's of cans of DEET. Buy 1 quart of this instead.
This stuff is awesome. We purchased some waterfront land on the ocean in Va. and have an off-grid camp set up while we slowly build and upgrade the property into our eventual retirement home/farm. The tick, mosquito, fly and gnat populations in this area are insane. I despise ticks especially since one tried to kill me by infecting me with tick fever when I was 5 years old and another gave my son Lymes Disease and put him in intensive care when he was also 5. Both of us were sent to John's Hopkins as 5 year olds because of ticks. I also hate bugspray. It's expensive, the cans of spray don't last long enough and if you leave them sit they'll eventually become empty on their own so stocking up doesn't help much. I started looking for another solution and in 2021 I bought 1 quart of this Picaridin cream. I'm still using the same quart in 2024. Full disclosure, I was the only one in my family that had been using it because everyone else is lazy. You can't just spray yourself real quick and be done. You need to put it on like sunscreen but it doesn't take that much. I'm 6'-2" and 240lbs. I use maybe 2 1/2 squirts of the pump to cover my feet, legs, arms, neck and head. I even rub a little through my hair. I spray my shirt with some form of DEET before I put it on. That's it. It lasts pretty much all day, except the mosquitoes will get me through my shirt later in the day because the DEET will wear off. My family will go through several cans of bugspray to my 2 squirts of Picaridin. The last trip out they finally realized that bugspray actually kinda sucks. So I'm on here buying another quart because I don't want to run out. I bought some cheap rubber gloves from Harbor Freight that I've started wearing when I put on the cream so I'm not eating it off my fingers later in the day. It doesn't wash off really easy which is a good thing, especially if you are a sweater or get in the water. Getting in the water will deminish it's effectiveness but I think it sticks on to you better than spray without a doubt. This stuff also dries quickly, the feeling of it on your skin is much more comfortable than bugspray and it doesn't smell nearly as bad. Mosquitoes absolutely hate it. I've watched them turn complete 180's as soon as they make contact with me. Gnats will land on you but they will not bite. They can still be pretty annoying if you are fishing at night because they'll swarm and tickle you but they do the same with all the other repellants. It repels chiggers and ticks great but if you are spending time in the places I do, you still need to check your underwear band and the other nooks and crannies down in that area where you didn't apply anything. The value this stuff brings is undeniable. $50 for a quart that could last you years as opposed to an $8 can of OFF that will last 1 person a couple days at best and that is assuming you use it up before it dries up on its own, unused. That's it. It is good stuff. In my opinion, and I think I would know, it is more effective, last longer, feels cleaner and is way more affordable then the other altermatives. If you get into the outdoors a lot, buy a quart. You won't regret it.

TBD -- highly-rated, safe and effective
I bought this highly-rated product at the end of August, but won’t be able to test it in the bug-infested woods until October. Consequently, I’ll update this review after I’ve used it in the woods. Sawyer's picaridin does NOT have an expiration date because it’s an extremely stable molecule (Sawyer's customer service agent said it’s stable for 10 years from its manufacturing date).. According to information on the Internet, Picaridin (also known as Icaridin in some countries) is widely considered one of the safest and most effective insect repellents available today. • Pros: Longest-tested; 12–14 hour protection; trusted brand • Texture: Smooth, dries quickly, non-greasy • Fragrance: Low to none • Best for All-day coverage in tropical and temperate climates Low Toxicity to Humans • Not classified as a carcinogen, mutagen, or reproductive toxin • No evidence of neurotoxicity, even in long-term animal studies • No significant skin absorption when applied topically (remains mostly on skin surface) • Safe for use on children as young as 2 months, per CDC and WHO guidelines ________________________________________ Skin and Eye Safety • Non-irritating to most skin types • Less likely to cause skin reactions than DEET • Does not damage plastics, eyeglasses, synthetic fabrics, or gear, unlike DEET • Mild eye irritation can occur if accidentally rubbed into eyes — rinse with water ________________________________________ Pregnancy and Breastfeeding • The EPA states that no reproductive effects have been observed in animal studies • Generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but as with all topical chemicals, use the minimum amount needed ________________________________________ Environmental Safety • Not considered toxic to birds or mammals • Low aquatic toxicity, though should not be intentionally washed into waterways • Does not bioaccumulate in the environment Picaridin (20%) is considered safe to apply on most exposed skin areas, including: • Face (including nose, ears, forehead, cheeks, and jawline) • Neck • Arms and hands • Legs and feet But as with any topical repellent, how you apply it makes a difference for safety and comfort.

Great quality for the price
The Sawyer Products SP564 Premium Insect Repellent with 20% Picaridin (lotion) worked perfectly for my trip. I was able to take it on my trip to the islands without any issues with TSA, which was very convenient. The lotion effectively kept insects away, and it’s comfortable on the skin without a strong odor. A reliable and travel-friendly insect repellent I would definitely use again.

TRY IT if you’re Outdoorsy/Hiking/Camping! (If You’ve Had Issues with DEET as I Had)
Since trying this I wish I discovered it sooner. TLDR: as a mosquito magnet myself, I have found this to be MORE effective and much longer lasting, less irritating and stinky than DEET. Does NOT destroy and dissolve synthetic plastics UNLIKE DEET! Does not negatively impact effectiveness of Sunscreen and cause the Chemicals to leech into your skin (also unlike DEET) and best of all is NON GREASY, NON OILY (it feels like applying a neutral moisturizing lotion vs. a volatile stinky solvent like DEET. picaridin has a very faint pepper-ish scent from the Piperidine derive) better for me than concentrated DEET formulas around 40%, have even tried 99% DEET which was no better than 40% and dissolved a hole in my bag. I have the Blood-Type or Sweat that attracts Mosquitos like a Magnet, DEET requires reapplication nearly constantly when sweating to remain effective for me (esp in humid areas, live on east coast NA). DEET feels awful on skin, it stinks, and if you have a bottle tip over in your bag or expensive ultralight camping gear, it will destroy and dissolve holes in polymers with ease. Conversely, despite being a profuse sweater due to consuming lots of liquids to stay hydrated, this stuff seems to remain effective far longer and resist running off in sweat than DEET. I also wear contacts and a major pain with DEET was running off in sweat from forehead area, into eyes and causing intensely painful burning. While picaridin can cause temp burning if you get it in eyes as well, I havent found it to dissolve so readily in sweat to be as irritating as deet. DEET would also inflame prior insect bites or skin blemishes and feels irritating in general. I still reapply a light layer to extremities on hot days every 8ish hrs or so, but on more average, breezy, or cloudy days this stuff lasts the 12+ hrs as advertised easily. I HIGHlY recommend giving this a try. Frankly I’m not sure why DEET is still the most widely carried by far with how volatile, stinky and unpleasant it is to deal with when there’s compounds like this which appear to be equally if not more effective with far fewer side effects.

No bug bites, but the rash was horrible
I bought this for my trip to the Philippines. After my brother got dengue fever from one of his trips there, I wasn't about to risk it. Plus, I'm a mosquito magnet. Well, this product succeeded in repelling mosquitoes. I didn't get a single bug bite. But I guess if it's bad enough to repel bugs, then it's enough to destroy sensitive skin. Days 1-3 of using the product were uneventful. But on day 4, my eyes and ankles swelled up. By day 5, every sun exposed area on my body where the lotion had touched broke out in itchy fluid-filled blisters and a rash. So, I guess this stuff is dangerous in the sun somehow.
