Excellent teaching step by step.
I've played the guitar for over 40 years but could only manage certain skills. The CAGED system truly is opening up the entire guitar neck. I've purchased many other books and even taught from many other books. If it weren't against my nature I would through most of them away. If I could only purchase from I author Joseph Alexander would be the one. He truly knows how to teach, not just play. There is a big difference. Step by step he guides, methodically, through important scales, licks and exercises. If you can't learn from Joseph then put the guitar down and take up something else.Seriously, the best guitar instruction, in print form, I've ever seen. If I ever teach guitar again then his are the books I will use and recommend. Great job Joseph!I've spent two months going through this book, practicing about 5-6 hours a week. I can now go up and down the neck in both the Blues scale and Aolian scale. This is something I've never before been even close to doing. I'm beginning to work with the Mixolydian scale now and it is exciting.DO NO HESITATE! BUY THIS BOOK! BUY ALL HIS BOOKS IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT LEARNING THE GUITAR!

Well written and useful book to improve soloing skills
I have started working with this book and it is extremely helpful. Mastery of the skills taught here will definitely improve your soloing skills and add more diversity to your technique. I highly recommend this book. I think this will certainly help me as I grow as a guitarist.

Helpful for deeper understanding of the fretboard; useful for lead and rhythm playing
Love this book. I'm only about a third of the way through (and taking my time with each lesson), but already feel like my knowledge of the fretboard has increased greatly. I like using the skills of the CAGED system not only for lead work, but for adding some variation to my rhythm playing and adding light detail to song while playing with friends. The licks are cool and get your fingers moving, though Mr. Alexander presumes that you are coming to the guitar with some familiarity with bending, picking, etc... This book is challenging me to be better and I've been playing casually for over 20 years. It's a great next step in my guitar education.

Learning the guitar fretboard
This book on uncaged rock guitar is pretty down to earth and easy to follow. I think it might be just what I've needed to find!

Poor images and grouped audio examples
I like the style of the author. But the book itself is very hard to use.Reading it on my Kindle is terrible - the images are soooo small - I had to switch to my laptop. And even there I needed to zoom in to be able to see tabs. Images are of poor quality.Audio examples should be split. And they are too quiet. When I practice I need to repeat each example 20 times. It is really annoying to click back, try to find the right one out of 5-6... When I could simply loop and play it for hours if I want. Please re-release the kindle version with better images and audio.

Good Learning Tool
I am a fan of Mr. Alexander's approach to guitar instruction, and Rock Guitar Un-CAGED is another useful tool in learning and becoming proficient in playing the guitar. Mr. Axelander provides useful licks as examples to understanding how the CAGED system can be used in developing solos and for on-the-fly improvisation. It does this by improving one's view of the fretboard and finding the right notes in the key that you are playing in. It also opens the door to understanding how different scales, as in the blues scale and even the Modes, are related to chords used in the song that you are soloing over.

My third caged book.
Years ago I started out with Fretboard Logic, which presented the caged system with the pentatonic scales. Then worked through Tagliarino's Guitar Fretboard Workbook, where you write in the notes in a workbook for major, minor, pentatonic, and modes, which is great for me as I'm very graphical minded being an engineer. This book is totally different, Joseph goes through a brief intro, then lays out a scale shape, sometimes with underlying chords, and gives you licks to play for each. The downloadable audio tracks are great, this mixed media approach works great for me, kindle version for reading, pdf hardcopy on my music stand, and the audio files on my computer. It's the best of both worlds, theory with musical practice. I recommend the other two listed above also.

You will want one more Joseph Alexander guitar book - great teacher!
You will want one more Joseph Alexander guitar book - great teacher!I have been fortunate to have great guitar teachers, the first of whom taught me the CAGED system. Joseph's book took what I had learned and added multiple dimensions to my initial foundation. Joseph's book shows not only the system but how to use it, which in guitar is everything. Theory is great (and important) but in the end it is the playing guitar that classes and books help make better with practice. This is one book you will not regret having in your guitar library. It reminds me of the guitar joke:What is the optimal number of guitars?one more...!It is the same with Joseph Alexander's books, I have more than one and I will keep getting one more. They are all useful and helping me improve my playing.
