hi, you need butane gas in the aerosol can. i have gasone 5x. on the bottom of the lighter there is an adjustment wheel for height of flame. it is black. as you look at the bottom of the wheel you will see a small hole in the middle of it. this is the filler valve. holding the butane can upside down quickly press the nozzle against the valve. there may be some leakage until you get the correct angle. this gas will be very cold so avoid prolonged skin contact. when you have a good seal the gas will flow until the lighter is full. i do not know if the following is recommended practice but it works for me: i place the lighter in the freezer for 5-10 minutes before i fill it. this seems to allow it to fill more completely. i hope this helps.
