Decades ago, I bought one of the first-generation headlamp lights from a former company called Nite-Lite. It was a plastic hard-hat with a fully adjustable metal headlamp mounted above the brim, which had a wire leading down to a 4 lb. 6-VDC gel-Cell battery that also contained a dimmer switch dial, and hung on a waist belt. The bulb was a standard krypton flashlight bulb, and the light functioned no better than the standard adjustable flashlights of that time. It was also very cumbersome to wear - think “miner’s” headlamp. The only good thing about that light was that it WAS rechargeable, and you got a lot of run time out of its fully charged 6” x 6” x 2” rechargeable battery! I tell you all that in order to compare it to this new-age style light I just bought.This new LuxoLite headlamp is a great little light, especially for the price. Having a degree of night-blindness since birth (due to RP), I became an expert on artificial and auxiliary lighting, and have personally been critiquing everything from flashlights to automobile headlights for more than 40 years. The latest and greatest thing to come along in lighting technology is LED lighting, and the absolute BEST let technology is the CREE LED’s. There are currently only 2 companies producing LED products that emit a TRUE white light, Polaroid, and CREE. The Polaroid product fails to operate properly at ambient temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, but the CREE products have not demonstrated that problem. This LuxoLite incorporates the CREE LED technology. Since the white Cree LED bulbs emit a VERY bright TRUE white “daylight type” light, which allows them to be far more efficient at lighting the way, while using far less electricity than even CFL lighting in AC applications. The only draw-back with CREE technology is that in DC applications, they tend to run hot, and battery powered CREE lights tend to produce a heavy drain on batteries. This unit claims to have extended battery life technology that gives it 30 hours of run time on a single set of 3 AAA batteries, but I have not yet had the time to test and verify that. Compared to my old miner-style headlamp, this one is VERY light (only 3 ounces), and is completely self-contained, with no wires or separate power pack to wear. Because CREE white LED’s emit light in the 5K color temp spectrum, this light puts out candle-power in the millions, and its 168 Lumens is very respectable for its size. While that number is rather low compared to the output of Many tactical lights, it is quite sufficient for the general intended purpose, simply because of the superior quality of light emitted by Cree bulbs. It contains the same basic 6 lighting modes as most Cree flashlights now have, plus a separate Red light mode. The “Red light mode” is produced by 2 separated Red LED’s (not red laser emitters) which combine to emit a dim red ambient area light, like a dull version of a film developer’s dark-room light (which in my personal opinion serves no valuable functional purpose, at least not in my case); and I believe that this light is also available in a different model that does not include the separate Red light mode. The unit also claims to be “water-proof” (which beats “water resistant“), but I somehow doubt that as its hinged battery compartment door does not seem to have any type of gasket, and the specs offer no comments relating to a water depth rating, and the list of recommended uses does NOT include “diving”. . The inch-wide elastic fabric headband is fully adjustable for any comfort level, and the light itself (which is only a light, with no attached magnifying device), has a 5-position (70-degrees total) locking tilt feature that allows you to position the beam exactly where you want it. As for the structure of the light itself, it is quite commendable. The unit is very tight, solid, sturdy, and well built, with a quality plastic housing that was well designed, however the lens is also plastic.There are just a couple reasons why I only gave this 4 stars. Normally I don’t waste my time on writing reviews unless they are either 5-star excellent, or 1-star terrible, but because this item is otherwise ALMOST PERFECT, here is my short list of minor imperfections‘:1). If it truly was water-tight, it would make a great diving light, but that does not seem to be the case.2). The plastic lens (while it is light-weight) is subject to potential easy damage, and care must be taken when cleaning it.3). The white light beam is a “spot” light beam ONLY, and can NOT be adjusted to a wide-angle floodlight beam, like the older miner-style lights can, so the beam remains focused strictly on the focal point you aim it at.4). It is designed to run only on 3 AAA batteries (included), rather than the rechargeable high-capacity nickel hydride batteries that most CREE flashlights take; so if you intend to use this light often for long periods of time, I recommend that you also get a couple sets of Rechargeable AAA batteries, along with a charger to keep them ready.With all that said, its still the best modern headlamp I have found, and it satisfactorily meets all my dry-land hands-free work light needs. Note that like most LED technology, the bulbs are not replaceable in this unit, but the average life of a CREE LED is said to average about 30,000 hours. Unlike many other venders, the company that is selling this item has taken the time to publish a very comprehensive list of specs and features on its product description page. ** Amendment **If you read through my review below you'll discover that the company initially refused to replace my broken headlamp. After posting that review they contacted me and agreed to replace it and felt insulted I guess that I suggested they were a sub-par company. I don't understand why they felt like I had abused the thing and the damage did not fall under warranty, despite my insistence otherwise. Also, despite it breaking, I still LOVE that little light and am stoked they're going to replace it. It somehow feels like keeping one of the pups from Mom's litter and that your love will transfer to the new pup (yes, I get emotionally connected to my tools :)). Very rarely do I give 5 stars but I want to give the company the benefit of the doubt and praise for correcting their course of action and really that headlamp is a good quality product, otherwise I wouldn't have chased after it!** /Amendment ** Let me start by saying I've loved this little headlight! It's my first and I've found it nice and bright and quite handy. I think my favorite part of it is it's "intelligence". I've never really needed the red lights but the white light has 3 or 4 settings and I've only used it on high. When you press the power button it turns on high, press it again and it's on low, press it again and it strobes, may be there's another I dunno but once it's been on it's certain mode for a short period of time, the next time you press the button it turns off. Get it? So, I hit the power button and it turns on high, when I'm done I just hit the power button again and it turns off, you don't have to cycle through the different modes each time you use it, I love that!What's not so great? The "lifetime warranty". Honestly, I didn't even recall that it existed but the lamp "mount" broke and I reached out to the company to see if they'd replace it and they refused. I've had the headlight for 2.5 years and I've used it plenty but not a ton and I've never abused it. I had some back and forth dialog and they determined that it must have broken from a fall or misuse despite my insistence that that wasn't the case. The lamp mounts into a plastic "frame" on the headband itself and the frame is pretty thin right where the lamp mounts, this is where it broke. I can still use it but the lamp can now easily fall out of the mount if I'm not real careful. I really don't recall breaking it, I'm not in the business of chasing free stuff and I can certainly afford to buy a new $20 light but with so many options out there I'm a little reluctant to get this one again due to the subpar company support.Pic 1: You can see the break on the right side of the framePic 2: You can see the break on the near side

This is the only true review on Amazon I suppose, I will keep it short and to the point. Every review on Amazon for this light is bought and paid for by the manufacturer, I don't like that Amazon is now full of these " I received the gift for an honest review" because I would have liked this light alot more if it was free. Now, the light... It is very bright with a poor light pattern, it really is more of a spot light than a hiking\cycling light. Should be fine for around the house stuff (ie, under the sink, finding something in the garage etc..) but the light is so directed that you can't see anything outside of the beam when you are out in total darkness. If I was to hike with this light I could definitely see down the path, but nothing side to side or up and down.. just directly in front. For me that won't work so it went back. The build quality was ok, nothing to write home about but for $25 it's just ok. The red led's are also just ok, with a very strange light pattern as well. I didn't spend too much time with the red mode as I knew it was being returned due to the primary lights not working for my needs. I have a 8 day Utah trip coming up and I would never use this light for the things we are doing. I moved up to a nitecore hc50, for $20 more it's a no brainer. Twice as bright, longer battery and much more even light output.

For the price, this lamp is not durable. Broke apart within one month.It would be if the hinge point and battery cover snap lock is made stronger. I'm disappointed for paying so much for this quality.
